Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I'm running a 94, standard 80 series with teh 1hz.
On Friday morning I noticed the indicator lights at the bottom of the dash flashing intermittedly.
Only 4 lights flash, they are the battery light, which is red, a yellow light that looks like a oil can with water underneath it, a yellow light that looks like a series of dots with lines coming out diagonally and a yellow tank with to pipes coming out, one on each side at the top and a third on the bottom.

Now ther lights only flash intermittedly and there is no effect on the engine or any of the instruments while they flash. IE all gauges stay the same and the all functions like indicators, wipers etc work. There is no cut out of power to anything that I can find, like lights inc spotties, stereo, uhf etc.

I was leaning towards the alternator and checked all the connections and all are tight without any earths, that I could find. I am getting 13.9 volts at approx 2000rpm at the batteries as well.

So I am pretty sure it is just a loose connection or bad earth, so before I rip into the problem, can someone give in a bit of insight into where to look first.

PS I did try to search, but I suck at the internet.

lube the plug on the back of the alt and make sure it "clicks" home.

Clean the terminals as well, before re assembly.

I had the same prob on my 80 after doing a few bog holes. Ended up being the alternator. removed it and found the regs brushs were full of dirt/mud. cleaned and checked they were free and making good contact and has been good for the last 2 years!

just a thought, may be the reg in your alt is worn out?

Yep, I agree. Pull out the alternator and take the back of it apart. Unscrew the bracket that hold the brushes and check they are springing out properly and no mud is on the contact surface. First time I didn't take the brushes out and it didn't solve the problem so I did it again (properly ) and that fixed it... (so far so good after about 3 years)

First things first...it is a common fault that the plug in the back has contact issues, from mud or water or simply because it has vibrated so much it now looses contact intermittently, a common fix is to undo the hold down strap from the inner guard 6 inches away from this plug and leave it off, after you have cleaned the plug and tightened the female connecters in it with a flat blade screwdriver...that should fix your problem.
Sometimes reconditioning the alt will fix the loose plug too My mate paid $250 3 times for a coat of alternator reconditioning paint, before the 4th guy fixed the plug for free....
