a long story short...

my 2L powered 86 lux doesnt like starting in the mornings so i assumed the glowplugs were farked, so i went and bought new glowplugs, went to my mechanic who told me the plugs were fine, he put a test light on them to show me the lack of power going to the plugs from the relay in the engine bay, so we traced the wires and found the problem in the relay itself, so we took the wire that runs from switch under dash to spotlights on front bar and wired straight to glowplug relay.
so now, when i want to start car, i turn on ignition, flick switch for spottys (i mean, glowplugs), start engine (which now starts perfectly every time), then turn off glowplug switch (although, glowplugs turn themselves off automatically), and away i go.
i can always wire spottys up again so that doesnt bother me.
is this bad?? am i gonna do any damage to my engine??
what are your thoughts??
thanks

Note exactly sure what you mean, but I rooted my glowy relay in an underwater mishap and instead of replacing it etc, my auto sparky just wired in a push button on the dash to operate the glowies. I just hold em in for a few seconds then start er up, no probs. Think is sort of the same as yours. If so won't damage anything I reckon. As long as the glowies turn off, you should be sweet.

a 2L can't get any worse  if it puts the power to the glow plug's and u can turn it off its a pretty hot mod! nothing wrong with a little bush mechanics

Why didn't you just replace the relay? Or if you wanna keep it bodgy, at least wire in a seperate switch!

i had a farked ingition so we wired the glow plug to a push button hidden in the dash and the good thing with that is also a late night anti theft device they can crank it over but it will no start so it gives me time to get to the lux will me bat

is that innovation or what

so what happens when you want to turn the spotties on when your driving? will this power up the glow plugs again? not sure if this is a problem though

If you have to ask "Is this bodgy?" the answer is 99% of the times "YES".

Ha ha,

I have to agree with tt6_lux... My answer was yes, it is bodgey and that was without opening the link!

farily standard, much cheaper than a relay, up to you whether you keep it or not, ive seen push buttons to switch early hiluxes and cruisers off when the fuel control relay dies as they are an expensive unit

It's a simple fix for an expensive and common problem. It's not factory so in that context yes it is bodgey however the only real problem with what he has done is that he wired it to your existing spottie switch instead of putting in a seperate push button type switch.
