hi there, we have an 89 4.2l turbo GQ. runs like a dream, starts perfect every time. sent it to a mech to have a pre-gas install check up (to make sure it is ok for diesel on gas) had a pyro gauge fitted, radiator removed and cleaned, compression test, exhaust flow test and a dyno run.
now it starts like a pig. it will keep on turning over without starting and heaps of black smoke coming out whilst trying to start, finally starts, coughs a huge black cloud and off we go. mostly seems to do it on the first start of the day, after that it starts fine. even if the first start for the day is at 4pm.
tonight i thought it was going to flatten the battery before it finally started.
battery is under 12 months old.

thanks guys!

if they checked compression through glow plug holes, maybe they have forgotten to reconnect something?
is the glow plug light doing what its supposed to?

cheers, andrew

still sounds like a glow plug issue to me......... check the plug connector on top of the inlet manifold.

could the glow plugs be loose at all? maybe he forgot to do it up or something so it looses compression?

try flicking the key to heat the glow plugs up 2 or 3 times.. see if that helps..

They probably put the spark plug leads back onto the wrong sparkplugs.

PS. Definately sounds like glow plugs to me. If you havent replaced them in a few years - go and throw some newies in anyway.

If it was me, i'd be taking it back to the mechanic and getting him to fix it. I hope he's not the same feller doing your gas install....

get some one to turn the key on and off so the glow timer functions and put a lest light from the glow plug power rail to groung and check if there is any power goin to the glow plugs.
