3.5L POWER PROBLEM

This has been a persistent problem. I can change the spark plug and for the first couple of thousand Ks she appears to run fine but then the fuel economy starts to climb and the power drops it appears to have a lot of carbon comming out the exhaust (dry). Ive just done 4 trips from Newcastle to Orange with yesterdays getting a great 35-40Lper 100ks
Any ideas would be great the engine except for extractors is standardwith 155Ks in it and is the any good mechanics in the Orange region.

Off the top of my head,

Carbie diaphrams, check em - replace them if they are split (quick easy job), check you vacuum advance to see if still is working, pop the top of the dizzy and the end off the hose and see if you can make it move by blowing down the line.

Choke, make sure it is not jammed open (or not closing all the way)
Make sure the little carbon filters off the top of the rocker covers are not resting on the throttle mechanism, the passenger side one does this all the time, take the air cleaner off and check it out from behind.

Take the plate out of the dizzy and check that the weights on the shaft are not seized, you should be able to gently pull them out, lube them up and make sure the springs have tension on them.

Look at you plugs and see what they tell you , they will probably be foulded with oil - check what they look like on the chart - that will give you a bit of a clue.

Timing - Check the engine timing and points gap adjustment, should be 6 degrees before(factory) but might be different for yours - if it has changed it will be written in your engine bay (different cam or timing gear perhaps)
