questions regarding a hilux diesel

Hi guys, long time reader first time poster

Im interesting in purchasing a diesel hilux. I heard from a mate you can check engine compression by taking off the oil cap and seeing if it spots oil. This diesel i want to buy does, is this a problem?

Secondly My bro has an 84 4runner. His springs have started to sag a bit. Would putting in a lightweight coil between the bumpstop and the leaf improve wheel travel significantly? or would it just make the ride rough as?

Thanks in advance

Ben

You are talking about blowby; all motors have some blowby but excessive amounts are a easy indication that the motor is going to need some dollars.
Have a look around and check a few, you will see the difference.

Blow-by at idle is a bad thing, or sign there is considerable ring wear.

Blow-by on a turbo engine at idle is the same.

A small amount of Blow-by while revving can be normal to a degree, but Blow-by on a turbo engine revving is expected.

Best bet is to get it comp tested.
As most diesels I have looked at had some form of pulse out of the rocker cover, alot more than pettys, and can be confused with blowby.

If your serious about it, get it comp tested, and another thing re the lux, 5k oil changes are a must, as oil thickening due to soot will result in starved big ends etc, and strip oil pumps off the crank in worst case scenarios.

Re sagging springs, just get some new ones.
