hey, i posted here the other day askin what was better a 60 series cruiser or a 4runner. Well i went for a couple of test drives and decided............the 60 series was a big heavy four wheelin machine that handled like shit and the 4runner was better but still not what im lookin for, well not that one anyway. Im now looking into buying a hilux and was wondering what model is the general preference. I only have $5000. is it still a bright idea?
Also if theres any suggestions on another car to buy that could be ok for $5000 then ill be happy to hear them!
Cheers!

a hilux and a 4runner are basically the same thing. petty much same running gear and peformance so I can't imagine it will be better than the 4runner
Buy a Zuk for $3000 and spend $2000 on lockers, gears and tyres. N*A*M has one for sale in the For Sale section.
All comes down to what you want for your money.
Do you ant a cruising type 4wd
Do you want a daily driver that can do the odd weekend
Do you want a hardcore comp vehicle
the list goes on, need some more info on what you want to do with it

Grimbo has some top points there.
The hilux to aim for would be around the 84-89 (LN65 - diesel, RN65 - petrol) I would go for the diesel, a lot more usable power, my opinion the petrols are slugs both on and offroad - no guts and no torque down low. More power for the diesel can be gained later on with a turbo easy enough. Lots of gear available aftermarket, and practical in the long run, with a decent tray for gear for any weekend. Plenty of room for spares as well, comfortable enough for road distances also. My camolux has NA 2.4d, plenty of power to tow the box trailer full of camping gear and tray stacked with 5 jt2s, 31's as streeters.

What sort of tyres, lockers and gears are you going to get for 2 Grand????
I would go a 84 hilux with the 3y petrol engine. You should be able to get one for around $4000.00 in good condition!
AND if you go by GRIMBO's Calculations with the $1000.00 left over you could get LONGs, dual cases and a set of BFG Krawlers!!!!

i think the weekender probably, i have another car though so i could maybe just get the fourby for off road only, although a lot of the time we do go four wheel driving is rather spontaneous, i.e a sweet lookin track on the side of the highway after it has been raining. what do you guys think??

it already has a weldy chirper

tyres + gears and you're all set to rock again.
but seriously though, you gotta decide what you want to do with your truck in the long run. rangies are another option that fits your budget. and they are coil sprung, power steering, v8. if i had $5000, i would wait a few more months until i could afford an 1989+ nissan gq patrol. also coil sprung, quite reliable and has a lot of potential. you could do up a gq and it would still street well enough to let you sell your current daily driver easily.
