When I did my conversion I toyed with the idea of using a Pathfinder / Terrano body which is the same as a Navara windscreen foward. The engine bay is plenty wide enough due to having a V6 in some models from the factory, there was plenty of hieght but the problem was length. To fit my motor in (VH45) I needed about an extra 100mm in length.
Other than that, good idea.
I've seen photo's of a D21 with a 350 in it and that was 2 wheel drive so it can definitely be done but it will entail some panel work.
Maybe a better option is a turboed VG30. Try an old style 300ZX single turbo. Quite an easy 400hp option.

cheers 4 that mate but as its all in and bolted up il go with this i think very easy 2 do i used original gearbox cross member just drilled holes bigger cut out old engine mounts and fabed up sum easy box tubbing everything is easy to get to meaning bolts, starter etc what im chasin is wiring from nav into the 308 engine the car is also bagged and shortn to suit the hardbody shape like in the states cool little ride lays out flat on the ground so i thought an old school engine conversion would suit it
