both very different vehicles.
one is also very large. one is not. one will use more fuel than the other. one will be slower than the other. one will be more comfortable to drive than the other. one will be much better offroad than the other. one will be better onroad providing the suspension is up to spec.
both are likely to provide years of faithful service but on the same token both have their various common model "issues"/"problems"/"characteristics" to watch out for (and to expect).
What's your reasoning for a 4wd? What sort of 4wding do you do? I'm assuming this will influence your decision as you are on a 4wd forum afterall.
blah blah blah thats my bit. i dont think either vehicle is better than the other. both very competant vehciles for what their designers intended.

How much do you think you can get a 2.8 GU for ?
Comparing a GU to a hilux is like comparing apples with oranges.
I agree with Yom on nearly all fronts.
You are probably going to get a biased opinion here in the Nissan area, and most on here are into serious modification of standard vehicles, with the patrol being a (arguably ) better platform for modification......
(flame suit on

)
Depends what you want to do with it.
I am a firm believer that the 2.8 is a very underated vehicle and bang for your buck is a very good platform for building a beast.

There are good ones (98 models) on the net for 12,000 to 15,000, but for that price i could get a pristine hilux as a good base to mod. The type of 4x4ng i do is a bit of everything, only had my license a few months so im still learning really but i wasnt afraid to try anything in the lux with relatively no fear of damaging panels, plus the tracks we go up, a lux will almost touch both mirrors on both sides on trees. I dont think a patrol would fit + more panels to damage = more worrring

i sold a heavily modded lux to upgrade to the GU (4.2 though) Used to do the same thins as you're suggesting and am now far more sedate out on the tracks, due to panel damage and potential cost of roll over.
Depends what you want to do - i would have spent the $$ and put a lexus V8 in the lux if it wasn't for family requirements for extra seating... But still happy with the 4.2 just changed what i drive now. Still goes awsome at far lower revs than the luxy and a far better ride

why did you sell your car and buy the exact same one again?
