I'd stay away from a SWB through these years, they're all 8 valve carby and use a trimatic auto. - 94 was the last year for the carby/three speed auto.
All LWB vitaras are EFI/4 speed auto (AW-4) and they also all have power steering. This is a far better combination. You should be able to get around 10l/100km with an EFI, the carby SWB's will be worse than this as they aren't as efficient and rev harder - I'd say 12l/100km or worse for a carby auto around town.
Just my 2C. I haven't actually owned either but have played around with a few.
Steve.

Bruce,
You are going to be looking at around 10l/100km. My manual carby just did 9.5l/100km when I filled it today and it needs a tune and service and my old lwb efi auto that you saw did around 10l/100km stock.
The early swb 1.6 8v carby model up to around Sept '94 (I think) had the 3 speed auto although there are a few odd ones that have the 4 speed auto but they are unusual and in theory didn't come that way although they do exist. After that they all had the 16v engine and efi and the autos went to the AW4. The JLX got all the power options including pwr steer. A/C was also an option. The lwb all had the 16v efi engine and they also got the 4 speed auto and pwr steer was standard.

my gf vitara in a 92 carby, a/c, auto, stock as a rock, 215 tyres( one size up from stock actually).
around town she uses 280/300 km from 35L = 12L/100km, and for long runs we get 350km for 35L = 10L/100km. great car we both think.
