Hi, I've done a bit of searching but couldn't find the info I was looking for.

My brother in law has a 1992 defender tdi and the turbo is on it's last legs (little boost and major shaft play). He's talking about getting it rebuilt, but I was thinking there may be an "upgraded" unit he could buy instead. The stock turbo is a garrett, non watercooled, non ball bearing. I know on other vehicles such as nissan td42's they ditch the stock one in favor of a BB turbo.

Is this a done thing on the TDi's also or should he just get the stock one rebuilt? What type of flange is used on the defender 200tdi's? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The stock one is a garrett T2/T25 and they're dirt cheap to rebuild. A rebuild kit off ebay is under $100 and you can put it in yourself if the shaft is still in good condition.

It'd be worth rebuilding to keep as a spare even if you're upgrading.
