100 and 80 series burning oil (is this common)

My friend has a 100 series that is using a lot of oil and has no leaks.
It is one of the first 100 series with the straight 6 petrol donk.It has about 200 000 on the clock.
He reckons that it is a common problem in the 100 series petrol motor and read articles in mags about it.
I've never herd of it and think he's bought a dud.
Can the 100 series owners confirm or deny this.
and if it's not common why is his motor eating oil when it only has 200k on the clock.
Thanks
Burnsy

early 1fz 100series motors have a problem with the valve stem seals mine is doing it as well the 80 ser dont do it as well as the later 100 ser 1fz the seals were changed when they changed the head from dizzy to coil pack not a big prob unless you let it run out of oil.you can get seals done on the car but it is a pita if you havent got a valve spring compressor ,the only other way is a head r&r and overhaul $$$$$ just top up the oil and run some wynns engine stop leak helps a lot dosnt fix it permanently .just keep an eye on the oil level untill it is fixed

I'm fairly sure his has a coil pack.
If it does have a coil and no dizzy it should have the good seals?
It will be here for an oil top up shortly. I will check.
How much would a mechanic charge to fix the problem?

The valve stem seals in my 95 model 80 are leaky.
It started blowing smoke at about 140 000 klm. using 15w/40 engine oil.
Try using different oil.
The owner manual suggest 15w/40 or 20w/50 engine oil.
I now use 20w/50 and reduced oil consumption and smoke.

I have a 80 series built 12/95.
It only has 140,000 on the clock and it uses no oil at this stage.
What year did they put the dodgey valve stem seals?
Do i need to worry about mine going the same way soon?
