hey guys just trying to get some info together about doin an auto transmittion upgrade on my sierra. i run a 1.6 litre efi baleno motor and series 4 transfer. i wish to retain my sierra transfer during this upgrade. i understand that a vitara auto will mate with the baleno block. the info i require is about the electrical side of the project. do i need to upgrade the engine management computer or will it need to be replaced? does anyone make an adaptor plate for this project? doea a vitara auto require an seperate management system? Any info on this project will be muchly appreciated. thanks

early vitara 4 speed auto's ran a seperate comp, though it did link with the engine management comp. the circuitry in the baleno computer won't allow the auto to get the info it needs[ and you can't use it for a vitara auto]. if balenos were auto they had an auto and egine comp in the 1 unit. i'm sure there would be a way to hotrod your ecu, but i doubt whether anyone would want to takle it. changing to a vitara ecu would involve re-doing the loom and changing manifold etc- huge job. you could go a vitara 3 speed auto but i wouldn't waste my time as they are a trimatic and very nasty units. i have done plenty of electronic auto conversions and i have looked at this problem before, will need too much money to solve. and for anyone who is reading this if you plan on running a 4 speed auto make sure u have an early vitara 1.6, or type 2 with the right loom etc.

You can manually control an AW4 - ok it doesn't shift by itself so call it a clutchless manual.

I was building a little ECU but lost interest as the "manumatics" cool, and I got sick.....

Its bloody fantastic off road, doesn't change at the wrong time, stays in the gear you tell it too and shifts up and down instantly - at times you would NEVER think of changing in a manual.

In a perfect world i'll finish my little ECU for slack road driving - but for off road the "manumatic" is my idea of a good thing.
