Well I do have the widetrack axle here but I'll have to go spring under or use Hilux axles at both ends.

Thanks for the link.

so if you use a factory diff that is setup for spring over ala hilux you can use them in that configuration. Would this be a way around the lift laws and problems in QLD?

It's supposed to be a way around it legally, so if its gonna be all too hard under QLD laws using the Sierra axle then I may well have to flog it off and use Hilux axles.

The reason I didn't want to do this in the first place is the complexity and the cost of doing both ends, buying aftermarket R&P's, new wheels and probably custom driveshafts as well.

Using the Sierra stuff will be much simpler in so many ways.

I will have to do the measurements to know how much spring lift I will need to stay spring under and clear the diff.

There's no question that it isn't really that hard a swap when you look at what these guys have done. If you've done a wheelbase extension that's pretty much the same sort of job, just there is the extra issue of the engine crossmember in this case.

I may not face the same issues this person is currently since I intended to extend wheelbase slightly. If necessary sump modifications or extended bumpstops are a consideration, or evcen trying to adapt the Vitara style 3 link coil rear to the front.

isnt the vitara rear diff like 6 inches wider then a sierra diff?

if it is how u will u get it to fit in the front without major rubbage?

So luis when are you going to commit and get it done. You can paint it yellow if that will help make your mind up :D

Maybe it's just me - but i reckon that site makes it look pretty simple to do...

I just don't understand what is holding you vitara owners back :?

i've been checking that thread every 1/2 hr over the last few days to see how its progressing :D . looks farken high though, needs at least 36's to bring it into perspective

and greg, mines a DD, so if i could do the whole thing in a few days, i'd do it, but i'm sure there would be plenty of little drama's that'd drag on, so i need some other transport first ;)

The big thing is gonna be whether or not it really HAS to have a SPOA to clear the sump - with SPOA not being a legal conversion here.

Likewise the overall track change may make the whole thing illegal too, although I'm hoping the offset rims will bring me into "acceptable" based on previous discussions where a Widetrack axle swap was considered acceptable.

Been out there with a tape measure tonight and with (supposedly) 2" lifted Sierra springs it's gonna have a HE|_|_ of a lot more clearance than + 2" so I don't reckon it's gonna be that big an issue.

I think there will need to be a short chassis extension.

However, as far as lining it up goes, no probs at all. :D

I'll not be doing much more with it, until Monday when I go and talk to an engineer if I get the chance.

At least now I can see it, and it looks pretty easy. I get a few bits welded by the engineer for me to bolt the springs to, drive it home (they're not in the way of anything until you put the springs in), then strip and re-assemble, then drive it back.

Anyone able to tell me exact distances between the front and rear spring mounts on the sierra front leaf?

Or exact spring lengths for unlifted springs?

thats what i was thinking andrew. looking at those pics, its very possible to weld on all the spring mounts while still keeping the thing mobile, then swapping everything in one hit. could probably even calculate tailshaft lengths etc. and get them fabbed up prior so everything is ready to go.

The tailshaft lengths are only an issue for offroad use or extended wheelbase.... you can drive home and then stick it on the ramp and see how much the shaft falls out by.

Better to do this than make a wrong guess :D

Yeah... do the bits you can at home... make the job cheaper and more satisfying.

I think if you are going to do the swap you should go to coils.
I don't like his extensions as I think they will end up bending and they look to be out there to be broken off.

Yeah coils would be better but much more pricey, and the location of the coils on the shorter axles may be an issue.

If I was you I'd do coils.... unfortunately being me that means I will probably go leaf SPUA

I'm not os sure the extensions are that necessary.... Depends on how long you want the springs to be to get the best articulation I suppose.

yes, his extensions look a little on the weak side. needs more bracing

Perhaps a silly question - but would this issue improve if you swapped the sump on your vitara engine for a sierra sump (just like people do when putting a vitara 1.6 into a sierra).

This may increase clearances?

Excellent, I never thought you'd be one to offer to finance mods on my GV... thank you thank you thank you

But just don't forget to cater for the engineer's certificate as well... it has to be legal

:D

Well worth consiering... If it's been done using the Vitara motor in the sierra with no problems due to the sump change then I probably would do the same in the Vitara.

Anyway I think there will be a slight delay due to the price change of the 4.24:1 calmini reduction gearset ...... :D

No....

There's obviously gotta be some blue spray paint on it yet.
