hey guys im looking into painting my gu patrol! its dark green and all pannels are in good condition but are scratched like you wouldnt believe! i know its a 4wd and it gets scratches but my mates a spraypainter and sprays mainly kitchen doors etc but has done a couple of custom cars i know off and have seen!

i have a few questions for anyone who has helped or done this themselves! Im going to stick with the standard colour as it will be easier and i wont have to do engine bay and inner door trims-Is this correct-?

also what prep work should i do apart form removing bumpers etc and covering window trims! I mean, the actual body pannel I will be painting! what sort of sanding back will it need and is there special sanders out there for this? Also will i need to prime before repainting or isnt this needed as it is already painted before!!

thankyou guys, i could ask my mate but i just want to get other peoples opinions and ideas so i have a bit more of a idea when i speak to him

Without seeing the 4wd in person it's a pretty vague question mate. I'd get your mate to look at it and get him to tell you how he wants it preped.

To do it properly you need to remove windscreens, door handles, moulds, flares, belt moulds etc. Then depending on wheather it's a solid, metallic or pearl on what type of prep you need to do but if it's pearl or metallic and if the scratches are threw the clear then it needs to be primed.

Solid colours on the other hand you can cut a few corners and it's not noticable.

Cheers Mick.

the Green on the Gu's is a dark Metalic Green, that may help with a few more answers,

also, we have a U in the same green, and ours is scratched to the max, we havnt worried about it, and id say if you respray yours its only gunna get scratched again, so id not worry,

just wipe it over with stainless steel polish and you wont see any scratches unless they are through the paint
