how to tell if you have a bent front axle?

Post by whiteknight »

The front tyres on the 80 Series are looking like this |-----\ from the front so I am wondering wether its just the wheel bearings or might be a bent axle as I did get it airborne a few weeks back.

Is there an easy way to find out?

Jack the wheels up, and shake them - like, try to wobble them. If there's play in them, wheel bearings. If not, something else.

A wheel alignment will tell you. The camber will be all to shit if its bent (assuming bearings etc are ok)

I did that once, the tyre shop that did the alignment didn't see anything wrong.

When I asked them if anything appeared bent, they said "oh yeah, but you can't adjust it so don't worry about it".

I jacked up the side in question and no play that I can see anyway :(

Anything else it could be other than a bent axle housing :?:

Some vehicles start to leak from the axle seals if it has got a bent housing.
Other wise only an alignment or a jig at a panel shop will tell you.
With a live axle there is not much to adjust so if it is bent you will soon know.
