looking at getting a duel fuel 80 series 4.5 petrol, if anyone has fitted a turbo intercooled system to one i'd love to hear about it. Power, fuel economy and everything else.

Mate bolted one on 2 long weekends ago. using standard computor with a rising rate fuel reg and bout 5psi of boost. goes well n got better econamy. even on 315's
He is going to put an aftermarket computor and an intercooler on it soon.

Ps he can buy a kit from AXT for under 3k, it includes manifold, dump, turbo, oil return for the sump (you have to braze it in) and a few hoses etc

a few places do supercharger kits for them.

A guy around here has the 4.5 motor, dropped it into a 1970's toyota crown, and got about 575RWKW from it, on stock internals, until it threw a leg out of bed (it ran reliably at the strip on less power too).

he's currently building a hipo one now i think...

Safari turbo systems used to sell a bolt on kit that produced 240kw at the flywheel.
Think they still do them cause they ship them to middle east where they are very popular.

I'm keen on doing this to my 4.5L petrol 105 series but haven't been able to find any information or kits

I've found information on superchargers but they want about $6000 +

There was a fellow on the Gold Coast that had a turbo on his petrol 80 series, it went like the clappers. He raced it in a Motorkhana once at Parklands, beat all except an Evo Lancer. I think he owned a turbo and tuning shop on the Coast, and it was his display car. Dont recall name.

Had a turbo intercooled 4.5 in the mid to late 90's with Safari kit, running 3" exhaust etc, was making 220 rw kw and 580rw Nm back then, on 10 psi boost [was the stormin norman dark blue 80, a month or so after I sold it] was a very nice car to drive, would go to rev limiter in top gear, Craig Martin had it up the pointy end of the Aust Safari back then, and we did Ateco in it and finished fourth or something.

Currently have a 95 auto 4.5 with CAPA supercharger running 7 psi boost, making 150 rw kw and 520 rw Nm with std computer, rising rate reg, hard wired fuel pump, just need to stop car trying to lower pump volts to lean it, and make check engine light come on now.

I was going to turbo this one too, but the CAPA kit came along from a wrecker I know, and was a great price.

My old 80 turbo intercooled would return on 285's around 14-15lt per 100km around town/hwy, would get as good as 11 lt per 100km [proven during an LCOOL economy run previously, when a factory TD was the only vehicle, which used .5 lt less than mine, for same trip on an economy run organised at the time] and would get up into the low 20's per 100km, if driven hard.

I have been getting 19's per 100 out of my 95 80 auto on 37's before the supercharger, and its only been on a week, so havent got to work out if economy has improved by much, but Im expecting low 16's per 100km, based on previous experience with other vehicles and kits.

Post 95 models are the best to do forced induction, as the injectors etc will handle the requirement, pre 95 require extra injectors etc, to make good power.

There is a low boost kit available, about 150 rwkW. I've done custom ones and straight LPG ones over the years, they go like hell. The safari kit was good, about 180 rwkW, but you can do better, larger intercooler and a BB turbo, aftermarket management, fuel system etc. Easily make 200 rwkW on stock engine, more if you are game and the klms aren't too high.

I'm happy to answer any questions on turboing 1FZ that I can guys.

I'm not particularly competent on the ins and outs of the factory EFI system as I've only ever run a full programmable ECU, but can answer prettymuch anything regarding standard engine component strengths, series 1 to 2 differences, aftermarket parts availability + cost, HP potential and turbo sizing.

Cheers
Sean :)

hey, just finished my turbo kit on my fz105 landcruiser, got the boost response and much better fuel economy i expected, but i am suprised at how much power ive got at a low boost setting. (11psi) it made 281kw at the wheels through 315's and an auto! and that is on injected gas. thats enough to beat most wrx's in a 3 tonne 4x4. i have pictures and video's but dont know how to post them yet.[/url]

So by wiki, standard hp for the 80 series petrol is 212hp (158kw). Im assuming thats at the fly wheel. How much does it lose by the time that gets to the wheels?

i'd be guessing about 40% drivetrain loss. it is a big heavy box/diff to spin
