hey,

noticed a tiny amount of surface rust under the back of my vitara and got me wondering, whats the best form of rust protection ?

i've heard of electronic rust protection but am not sure how effective it would be.

does anyone have it on their suzuki and is it effective at all ?

I bought 5 x 350g aerosol cans of deodorized fish oil just last week from blackwoods, $11 a can, I use them on my suzuki (swb) and patrol (ute). 5 cans last me a year doing every corner of both cars twice a year, with regular touch-ups on areas that get exposed to the elements.

they r useless! i work for toyota and they sell em on new cars. and when they come back for service the screws that hold em in are even rustsy. stick wit lanolin or fish oil. cheaper n more effective.

most the electronic systems are cr-p.

the CAT system works well if fitted correctly and used as a daily driver. when the battery voltage drops below 11.8 volts bout as good as tits on a bull,
fitted one to a cruiser once, rubbed the tow bar back to bare metal, the vehicle went to isrilite bay for 2 months on the coast, it stayed shiny mettal until one night the fridge drained the battery a bit and went rusty.

The rust you already have, treat with a rust converter. You can buy it from hardware joints, and it sends the rust black, and prevents it growing further. Then of course re-paint the affected area.

Then rust proof the car. After stripping down an 1984 LN65 Hilux, the best anti-rust approach I would recomend is 5mm thick coating of baked on diesel oil, I think I have in my shed the most rust free Hilux cab in history  . That said I use Lanolin oil on my Sierra, hasn't got anymore rust on it than is had 3.5 years ago when I bought it.

cheers guys,

i didn't realise you could use lanolin oil on the car and keep it there for long periods of time. Does it come in a spray bottle ?

is it safe to use it around the engine bay ?

Yep Spray it wherever you like. It comes in a pressure can usually. Try and get a nozzle extension for it so its easier to spray in hard to reach places.

I buy it in 5L (~$80) bottles and use a sprayer hooked up to the compressor. I find it is easier if the car is on stands and the wheels are off. I personally cover my brakes in shopping bags, to make sure no oil gets on my brakes, then check them afterwoods as well.

WOOLUBE industry extra would be the best lanolin based one in my opinion. INOX MX-3 would be a close second. and for the price you cant really complain.

skf used to make stuff called LHRP was just a much much thicker version of the above and i'm not sure if it was lanolin based but this stuff was thick and expensive. We used to use it as a rust preventative on our modified or bearings in mid modification but we cant buy it anymore and cost price for a 4ltr can was $250.

seen that electronic rust protection in trading post for $100 and heard its ok. for that price im gonna give it a go. on my car i have a combo of underbody tar, black rustkill paint, tectryl wax rustproofing and will add the electronic stuff for extra support. will be all tested out this summer.
