a mate of mine got some maxxis 35's for his cruiser - he was REALLY upset when they were the same size as his cooper 33's!

A mate had a set of 33" buckshots.. they came in at close to a 31.
I had a set of 35" mudzillas...... they were more like a 33..
yet my 38.5 creepeis actually were a 38.. go figure!

why does that happen? is it something to do with not installing on the right width rim or wat?
just seems gay that companies are selling a product that isnt actually wat is listed as the product

I am guessing that your creepies are bias whereas the others are radial.

rim width, full inflation (80psi) at 0 weight
will have a much different outcome to a 1" wider/thinner rim at road/track pressures with a 4x4 on it

I love my 33/12.5/15 Swampers they're oversized and as big as a 35 claw and nearly as big as a 34 JT2. Simex and Swamper both make tall tyres. I haven't put a Simex Centipede up against my Swampers, but most others dont come close. Claws are smaller, Buckshots are, MTR's are Coopers ST are.......... I run Maxxis 751's 33/12.5/15 as roadies and they are taller than MTR's but are still nearly an 1" smaller then my Swampers. I have compared all of these so far on 15x8 rims to make it fair. It sucks when you pay good money for tyres that are smaller than exspected

I feel the pain

Just fitted 255/85/16 Big Horns and ran the stagger tape around one.
Mounted on a 6.5"rim and at 31psi it measured exactly 2650mm around, which works out to 843.5mm, or damn close to what the book calls out (33.3")

Is it really that big a deal? I have 33" Bighorns and they are great.

my old 33 bighorns are 1/2" smaller than my 33 swampers and a full 1" bigger than 33 claws.
i'd say they are pretty close to a true 33"

Mates 33" bighorns are almost identical in height to other mates 33" BF muddies but are 2"s taller than my Kumhos an my Nangkan mudstars
32" BFs are 1" taller than 33" Kumhos an Nangkans

I believe the diameters of tyres are measured not including tread.
Is this true?

my 285/75x16 buckshots are exactly 33inch diamter.
the 33/12.5x15's are generally smaller than 33 inch diamter anyway.

Yes, as I have better ramp over and also diff clearance is better than a lower sized tyre. Have a mate that tryed the rock ledge at Cityview after I had gone up (both same lift etc except I run swampers he runs Maxxis). he took the same line and had to back down as his ramp over stop him. Also my stepfather got diff out hard on a rutted track at Bellbird Park He was running Claws I was running Mongrels at the time I drove straight through. Unless you buy them for show it matters IMO

ofcourse it matters.
when the largest tyre u can run legally is 33" and Mr c0cksmoker traffic branch reads his 33" of the sidewall then u want to get as much of that 33" as u can.
as far is this problem goes, i have decided to run 305/70/16 kuhmo kl71 and 16" rims. the supplier has assured me the will measure the full 840mm that they are surposed to. if they do not, i gues they wil be going back...

If you do the sums, 255/85/16s should be 839.9 ((255x85%x2)+(16x25.4)) ... so your 843.5 measured via the radius could just be your error in measuring - radius is pretty hard to measure accurately.
On the numbers, 305/70x16 = 833.4 = 32.8"
285/75x16 = 816.8 = 32.16"
But on an 8" rim it will be higher than on a 10" - makes sense because it's squashed together more to fit on the 8".

Have you quoted up many brands of tyre lately? Im just interested cos i was thinking of going the 33" bighorns too...
But now in so confused on what brand tyre etc etc.
"Rant on"
I rang a place today in Mt Druitt, I said i wanted 33"x12.5x15 the guy said huh? Whats it say on the side of the tire? So i said it again, and yet again. And all he knows is metric..DipSh!t But finally he rang his boss and got a quote, he said $265. I then i asked what 'type' of maxxis is that tyre Bighorn or what? ? He goes the maxxis brand tyre.... I hung up... "Rant Off"
Im in penrith, Can anyone tell me whos a good dealer for 4wd tyres?(sorry hijack)

It's a bugger your down south as Dave at Tyreworks Moss St Slacks Creek Qld had the 33/12.5/15 Bighorns for $240e I bought the 33/12.5/15 Maxxis 751 Bravo for $210e I also Bought the Swampers Through him at $330e a while ago. Gives you a rough idea on price though.

thats what I was thinking.
if the cops actually only look at the tyre size imprinted on the side wall, then you should try the Super Swamper SSR Radials-
http://www.intercotire.com/site34.php
in a 285/75x16 size their actual diameter is 33.9x11.4 Now thats a big 285 !
