customising sierra diffs
customising sierra diffs
i was just wodering if any body has shaved there WT diffs and how much did you gain ...
i would presume 1 - 1/2 an inch ?
other point is the ball jiont the steering knuckle sits on ... has any one skulloped this to allow more lock? (this could make it weaker?)
or .... replace them with bigger ones to get more lock?

there have been a few shaved ( I've done a pair) and yes there's a fair gain. I think 1.5" is pushing it - maybe 1" max. It is worth it though IMHO.
The lock limit is there to prevent destroying CV"s - that's where the engineering constraint is.
In any case you'll hit the wall with nearly everything at once if you try to increase lock - tyre on inner guard, tyre on chassis, tyre on spring, steering box travel.... basically more track width would be required (at the axle, not through rim offset of spacers) to make it work.
Steve.

sorry steve i was saying between half an inch and a inch
hmm i want to keep a it suzuki
so would be a suzanna diff be the only way? .. i would presume these are wider + more lock but thats starting to get to big
other idea was to use the design idea ...umm i cant remember it is called
its incorporating a uni joint instead of a cv while still going into a ball joint

Yeah, I think a suzana would be the only feasible way. I've looked at double CV's and other weirdness but really it all looks too hard to me.
Suzana's have their downsides though, mostly scrub radius and clearances on a sensible height, sensible width car. - from what I've seen it seems scrub radius gets out of hand.
I do not believe that a uni that can fit into the stock swivel housing would be strong enough, and then you'll hit the wall with lots of other clearance issues as per my other post.
Also, not all uni yokes allow as much steering as you imagine. going over 40˚ seems to get very very big and expensive.
You're LWB yes? unfortunately, the ackerman angle isn't ideal on LWB sierras as it wasn't corrected for the added wheelbase. I think this adds to the lack of maneuverability LWB's have.

Is it? Not having a go, lots of cool stuff isn't legal, but I'm pretty sure an engineer would be very interested in how it was done.alien wrote:i reckon - taking 1" off the diff is the same as going from a 31 to a 33... except shaving the diff is legal.

i cant imagine that shaving the diff would significantly weaken it to a point it would require engineering... can you? and that said, a cop that pulls you over and sees 31's, SPOA, bigger engine etc, doubt he'd notice a shaved diff as being anything out of the ordinary, and for insurance, the diff would have to be the cause of the failure for it to be blamed for causing an accident right?...
im just theorising though. =)

The worst thing about censorship is ███████.
I don't disagree, but a diff housing is a structural member and cutting it is a structural modification.
They'd want to know. It's not automatically legal.

anybody know how wide a vitara rear diff is?
a suzana diff on a normal wt look abit wider anyways .. could this be countered in the back by using a vitara diff to equal it up

Vitara rear diff is 130mm wider than wide track.
Diff offset is wrong too - it's actually slightly offset to the left.

I have 32" Simex's and have 300mm under my diffs - about the same as a Hilux on 35" Simex's
Its well worth it if you drive lots of ruts - like we have here in NZ.

Nice work Ben, did you do that work yourself or have it done by a pro...?
Was it a straight cut of the bottom then a matter of fabbing up a plate to weld onto the bottom.........? Im guessing the extra trusses would also be a important mod with this sort of mod to keep strength.

U check that link mroffroader?
While adding more power to the Grey Ghost project, we realized that harnessing that power at the axles was going to be a big chore. The gears had already been updated with a set of 5.12s and a locker, but we wanted to strengthen it from the axle shafts out. Click through for a closer look...Looking into the Trail Tough Suz-Ana series of front axle housings, we found out that they offered both a ‘Big’ and ‘Little’ version. The ‘Big’ version used a Sidekick/Tracker rear differential, larger axle shafts and a Dana 44 style knuckle setup. While very strong, it meant buying more gears, locker, etc. The answer was the ‘Little Suz-Ana’. While it shares the larger axle options and the Dana 44 style knuckles, it retains the use of the Samurai front differential with only a simple side gear swap.

Have you priced them and the axles, unis, wheelbearing units and brakes they require? They're cool but there'd be $10K in the front easy by the time you could drive on it.
