roof rack preperation

Hi all,
picked up a roof rack on the weekend and wanted to give it a once over.
I think its a home made jobbie - but very strong.
The frame is steel, whereas the floor mesh and mounting brackets are alloy.
I can just give the alloy a once over with wet and dry to bring it up as new, but for the steel frame im not to sure how to proceed.
I know powdercoating is an option, not cheap and hard to touch up. So would I get away with just giving it a good clean and going over it with some cans of kill rust? Would it be worth sandblasting it?

I would hit it with some red oxide primer or similar, its very tough and sticks like the proverbial poo. The your choice of topcoat

If its really rusty sanblasting or even just a wire brush on an angle grinder to clean the metal up then prime and paint. Last time i had a full length rack blasted and powder coated it was $140 for both and the rack cost me $100 not bad for a $600 + rack new.

When ever i respray stuff I tend to go for the grinder with a heavy wire brush on it. takes off rust and flaky paint quickly. then hit it with kill rust or similar.
Seems to last quite well. $14 for the grinder bit (bunnings) plus $20 in paint should do it.

Thanks everyone, spent most of today cleaning up the mounting brackets and painting them - kill rust with primer (cant remember the brand) - will try to tackle the cage itself tomorrow - but with all the mesh its going to take an age.
