Answer = "yes" ;)

Legally you do, and if you happen to get caught without it, be prepared to bend over.....

However, on a dedicated LPG vehicle, i dont beleive that a catalytic converter is needed - although i'm pretty sure factory dedicated LPG cars do have them.

by removing the centre it causes an ugly sounding exhaust..! the sound it makes is hard to explain but it's like a crap buzzing sound.!
i gutted my cat on my tb45 after i had a bigger 2.5' system put on and it sounded terrible and i didnt notice any difference in power...so went back to the exhaust mob and they took it out and just welded a piece of pipe in place! problem solved.
im on lpg 99% of the time so i dont feel guilty ;)

the guys said the noise was made by the air "cavitating" in the hollow chamber of the cat instead of passing strait through it!

You cannot remove any factory fitted emission device on LPG on post 1986 (unleaded) vehicles, at least in Victoria anyhow.
There is a dodgy flaw that some engineers are using to get conversions through that allow the relacement of the carby if it is unappropriate for LPG, such as the bakelight Thermoquad.

hahah mate of mine has an r33 skyline and he pulled his cat out and brought it into work and cut cut it in half, pulled the guts out. and welded in a piece of 3" pipe (same as his exhaust diameter).
that night he took off out the workshop driveway and a blue flame about a meter long came rocketing out of the back of his car ahhaha.

sounds wiked and goes hard!!

Putting a pipe in is not wise as it shows that the Catalytic didn't just simply fail and break up passing out the exhaust, it can happen, and it would be easier to explain than a pipe welded through the guts.

well when u have a 3inch performance exhaust with a cat that has a hole at either end that is only 2.4inch big..... u have a bit of a power loss issue.
so u cut the flanges off the cat, bore them out to 3inch, get the steel cover off the cat, put in your 3" pipe, put the cover around the pipe and weld it on well, then weld up your flanges and away u go!
as much as i hate skylines, this one goes F**ing hard.
