hi all

i have searched and had a look through out the site.

i hope to be able to go to the dunes (boggy sand) and some tech stuff as well. at the moment my car just has some bigger tires 235,75r15 (already on when i got the car)

i have swb 1996 vitara with the 16v efi engine, i was wondering how capable they are? or do you have to do some work on them before they can go places?

any info would be great

my opinion is sand has 2 factors, Speed and flotation. The 16v efi is a pretty good motor for a SWB vitara and should provide you with enough power/weight to go just about anywhere your average person wants to go. You may have to keep your RPM's in the 1/2 to 3/4 range to help keep your speed up in the softer/uphill sections and beware changing up gears in the softer/uphill areas due to the lack of low down torque.

Try starting off with your tyre pressure around 18psi and if your still having problems drop them to around 14psi, this should still give you a safe enough pressure to not have to worry about rolling a tyre off a rim. Just remember to pump them back up before hitting the highway again.

As a side note, the best set of sand driving tyres i've ever owned was a set of very bald all terrain tyres. Tyres designed for 100% highway driving would be good as well, simply because they tend not to dig holes in the very soft sand as much as Simex/baja claws do.

Basically, it won't make any difference to your capability on sand.

It won't hurt, it will drive better on and off road, but you'd never say it was the difference between making it somewhere or not.
