scrubbing used tires ???

I've heard the term used in some of the lower budget race car sports that still use road going tires to race on.
I'm told that they use some sort of machine to remove some of the tread so they can race on it, Eg: a new tire with a tread depth of 12mm would be scrubbed down to a depth of 6mm.
Now the reason why i ask this if it's possible is because i bought a used set of 4 cooper SST's (265/75R16's) they have approx 70% tread left but the tread is feathered and stepped on two of the tires and the sounds a overcoming what the stereo is capable of !!!
i was hoping that if they can be srubbed that they would return to regular and be at like 50% worn as a trade off, which is fine as i only want these tires for a short time untill i can afford a lift and then bigger tires
I just fugured that if i removed the uneven wear than they might me a bit quieter.
or would a BIG ass burnout be just as successful

Is the un even wear where each nob of grip has been worn at an angle? like the front of the nob is 6mm and the rear is 9mm? or something else?
I bought some second hand tyres like that but havent noticed any noise. maybe my stereo is bigger

.
Ive never heard of having tyres cut/shaved down. I would think they will wear straight again if your alignment and pressures are correct IMO.

Putting the feathered ones on the back won't cure the problem.
They will continue to wear as they are now.
Your scrubbing/buffing idea will work but you'll end up with less tread than you think..
Talk to someone like Qld Raceway they might be able to put you onto a production racer that can do it for you.

You could always try swapping the left and right wheels over.
This would put the wear at the rear of the knob and should quieten it down.

that's exactily what i was thinking.
as to everyone else, these tires wern't worn this way from my car, i bought them s\hand with this wear already done to them so swapping them from left to right, front to rear on my car is gonna do diddley squat

so you want to just get rid of some tread? where are you located... just give me the two wheels some time and i would be happy to smoke some.. argghh i mean scrub some tread off them..

I think you are wasting your time and the money it will cost.
They will still be noisy due to the tread type but just not as much so. As started move to other side or rear and they will flatten out a bit.

i would say give them a skid but due to the lugs flexing they may still end up loud but i guess it will be fun for that short amount of time and you havent lost anything trying it haha

In all seriousness, why bother...if you want quiet tyres buy Highway terrains and be done with it.

i think everyone is missing the point, i'm aware that they will be a noisy tire( i've owned mud terrains before) but these are louder than my other car that runs bias MT baha Claws

i mean 110km\hr is nearly unbearable

what type of STT are they? are they the armortek style or the other style??? my STT armortek ones are quiet as... no joke, rolling downhill at 80km/hr clutch in, the wind hitting the windshield is louder than the tyres!
If you're saving for new tyres and these were free, i'd just deal with them - call it inspiration to save up faster =) haha
