2.4 Diesel crankshaft seal

Hope you guys don't mind me picking your brain,but I'm having trouble removing the timing belt toothed pulley off the crankshaft to change the seal, I've got a pulley remover using the threaded 8mm holes in the toothed cog trying to remove it but it'ds stuck there pretty well, just wondering if you could offer some advice and it's a 2.4 diesel.

Had this drama on my 2.8 it ended up breaking one of the bolts off in the toothed pully tried a few diffrent things to no succes ended up welding a slide hammer to it the heat helped swell it a bit which helped. New pully from toyota was about $90. Seeing you haven't broken a bolt yet try drowng it in some inox or penatriene? or try some of that loctite freeze and release

yeh same with my 3litre in the old lux. couldnt get it off so we just left her as is and she is still kicking now even with a turbo and a dirty knock in it hahahah

We used a set of bearing pullers on mine. It took a bit of patience (sp) but got there in the end. Tapped the end of the pullers lightly with a hammer and just going a bit at a time letting it do its thing slowly but surely.

Fellas? Image got a terrible oil leakage problem and it seems that it is a seal.. Either the oil pump or crankshaft seal, still not %100 sure which one. Which seal is usually the one that leaks? Thanks! And sorry for posting in an old thread, I just clicked it after the search..

It's very common for the front crankshaft oil seal to go on the L series motors (and a lot of other motors for that matter). But the problem as discussed is getting the timing belt gear off the crank as the seal sits right behind that.

Your only option is a lot of WD40, freeze/release and the pulley puller but if something goes wrong like the threaded holes strip out then yeah you will have to wreck the gear to get it off (cut it with a grinder or weld something to it) and of course have to be very careful in the process not to damage or mark the crank. Luckily the gears aren't super expensive to replace.
