Anyone done work on the genuine 40 P/S boxes? Mine works well but leaks. Just wondering if external seals will fix it or if it needs reco. Cheers.

if your going to the effort of puling it out then do the lot, its only another half hour and $5 in parts.

Can you part with the vehicle for a week?

If so find some one who can reco it at the right price, this is your back up.

Then rip it out and pull it apart, go to a bearing place with all the seals you pulled out and get new ones most are off the shelf o rings but if you need to order any in allow 2 days. Whack it all back together and see how you go. this will cost about $15.

If you cant put it back together then take it to the reco mob it should take 1 day.

If you do get it back together (not that hard just photo graph everything as you pull it apart) then put it in, degreas everything and see how it goes.

if it still leaks then take it to a shop and you have only lost $15. but tell them you have replaced all the seals as it should save you some $$.

the only reasons the home reco will still leak will be if a seal has worn a shaft, or a shaft is pitted. - in this case your generally up for a rechroming and more money than you think.

Its not the same box but I did my hilux ps box and its fine. saved $350 over getting the seals replaced by a shop. but if the shaft was stuffed they were going to want about $700 ish.

My input shaft was pitted and worn - but not too bad. I got around this by putting in a slightly thicker seal - same id/od - but a few mm thicker so it contacts on a different part of the shaft that wasnt worn. in the end I put 2 of the seal in series in case the pitting leaked, it didnt interfere with anything and there was plenty of space for the seal to fit in so I thought why not.

hope that helps somewhat.

Go through Repco, they are great and often do exchange, reasonable prices too..
