lock the front or rear in gq

hey i have tried to find a thread on this but haqd no luck, i have a gq shorty which has the factory rear lsd. Its turboed and running 35s. Im at the stage now that i want to start looking at traction aids. Ive read so many mixed reviews bout autolockers vs arb vs tjm. I want to go air locker i think its extra coin but oh well it will drive better. So what is the recommendation for which diff to lock i am only guna lock one at this point cause the budget doesnt stretch that far. front or the rear? also where is the cheapest place on the net to buy lockers, especially tjm as i think ill go that way

Lock the front because the rear LSD is pretty good.

also what sort of manual hubs do people recommend for gq ive currently got factory auto/ manual hubs that i want to change for manual hubs

throw the auto hubs out and go a set of Genuine Nissan Manual locking units. I have seen AVM hubs shatter to pieces on tracks and they weren't even locked. Never seen someone break a Genuine Nissan Manual locking unit yet, they are built too strong, a very good aid for Comp drivers thats for sure.

Never had a prob with genuine Nissan auto/manual hubs, they are bl**dy strong! I'm running Superwinch hubs now only cos I need low ratio when towing a tandem trailer on steep hard ground. Otherwise I would still have the auto/manuals.

I too run the auto/manual hubs and never had a problem.
The factory manual ones are very hard to find over here, most had auto or man/auto hubs.

The only factory hubs I have seen, were removed after a front locker was installed because they were too strong, and the guy was breaking cv's.
He went for superwinch hubs from memory as it didnt take long to replace if he was too heavy footed.

ill keep them then, i have been looking for tjm pro lockers on the net and i cant find any prices anywhere. I have found that arb lockers for 859 minus rebate from states that without a compressor 1100 with 24v comp that the best price???? thats us dollars

I'm sold on arb, last GQ had them front & rear, i broke 2 drivers side cv's but in the end learnt to be careful when engaging front locker. They are great..expensive but the best for my part.

I have never broken a manuel hub, but have split the GU auto hub through the spline and it was locked manually.

Are the genuine manual hubs very easy to come by over there?
Almost non existant here in NZ

decided to go arb, have found a good cheap place to get them from. ALthough they just sell by axle size, could someone let me know the axle code for the front of a gq? code plus splines, thanks. Locker only 769usd plus compressor230usd

May or may not help you but front arb locker for a GQ TD42 is RD09, rear is RD24 if i remember correctly.

are you sure on the rd09 i couldnt see that on their list and the rd24 was for a drum braked, im disc all round?

rd09 is discontinued. rd78a i think is new one. google arb difflocks

there ya go..and yep RD24 into 91 GQ..in fact probably all gq td42's but i won't stick my neck out too far there cos i'm not sure but definitely 1991.
I think gq's are all disc brakes aren't they???

When I had mine locked all they wanted to know before ordering was year and engine size...but if you're doing it online then you want to be as accurate as you can i guess.

Just dug out the jobsheet for my rear locker, despite not saying rd24 the part is stated as "ARB Air Locker NIS GQ/Y60 Drum Rear".
I hadn't noticed that before and I know I have discs all round too!
Cost was NZD$1794 gst incl a year ago and didn't include compressor etc!

thanks for that but i think the part number has changed as the h233b 31 spline now comes up as rd136. Im getting this from the alljeep website

Its amusing how everyone wants bomb proof hubs on their GQ but uses the standard CV's

the CV should not bee the weak link, it should be your HUB.
hub takes 30 seconds to replace, a CV takes 10 mins.

JEs
