NOKIA 6110 Navigator and oziexplorer CE

Hi,

I have just ordered a new Nokia 6110 navigator mobile phone and wondered if anyone has tried getting oziexplorer CE to operate on it. It has an active TFT screen. I haven't received it yet but will give it a go. Anyone else have the same phone on here and have comments about it. Three have it listed under hot deals.

There is (fairly basic) software that can display oziexplorer maps, but i haven't heard of anyone getting oziexplorer itself running on it.

...but i hope someone works out a way!

I have a 6110 as well.

It uses the Symbion OS but OziEx doesn't run on it Symbion

Slightly off topic, is the 6110 good as a GPS? I was thinking about gettin one next.

I have a 6280 thats about to run out, I looked for GPS sofware for this but could not find any.

there's lots of free ware GPS mapping programs for mobile windows as well.

The 6110 uses Symbion not Windows CE. If it did then I would be running OziEx and I've had my 6110 for less then a week.

Slightly off topic, is the 6110 good as a GPS?

I use the voice navigation on mine a bit for work trying to find places. It doesn't work to badly. I have Assisted GPS turned off, so depending on where you are, surroundings etc it can occasionally take a little while to get your location.

Like a lot of others it can struggle to find exact addresses due to the program or has the location in the wrong spot. For example it places my home address two blocks away, which is still closer then what whereis.com and other Sat Navs I've used get. So i usually only use it to find the street i need.

Now and then it will give some weird directions in my mind, but typically gets you to your destination without to much fuss.

I have an N82, which runs the same operating system as an N95, and an N73...
I run Route66 for the turn-by-turn street directory function, SmartComGPS for the OziExplorer style functions (it's very similar, but on my phone) and 3dtracking to automatically upload breadcrumbs of where I am from the GPS to a website when I go bush or motorbiking, so if I get stuck or injured, the Mrs (or my designated let someone know before you go person" can look up my location (eg when I'm unconscious in a ditch) and come get me.

I also use a UMPC (micro laptop with touch screen) with Oziexplorer.

Oh and I plug the phone into my stereo which plays DVDs and has a 7" screen, so I can see my phone screen in 7" instead of 3" - easier to follow on a bumpy road when i'm using SmartComGPS etc.

I work for a telco, so I use all the gear for everything it does.

Thanks roc monkey, we went looking on the weekend & sort of made the decision we will be going with these.
I just want something to give me basic directions when I am in the cities more than anything, if it finds streets thats fine, i dont really care if it doesnt find exact house numbers, I have eyes for that.

Silly question, does it work out of tower range? I generally dont have any issues with country navigation but it would be handy sometimes to have it show a backroad when required.

Any other silly things it doesnt do?

The 6110 works like a normal GPS, it doesn't need to be in normal mobile phone (GSM/3G) range unless you use Assisted GPS (which costs money BTW because you download data). I use mine with Assisted GPS turned off and it takes about 1 min to find satellites.

My only problem is the Route 66 maps are quite old even though I have the latest version (2007 Q2). I also have a LG GPS standalone navigation unit and it's maps are more up to date even though it still uses 2007 maps.

The 6110 is damn convenient in the car though.

Thanks TOL, I dont really want to buy a stand alone unit, waste of money in my book when I can get a phone or a laptop to do the same thing & they have other uses. It wont be used regularly so I think it will do the job.

I have looked at other threads on this as I searched after I posted (doh) & everybody who posted seemed happy with it so i think we are sold.

TomTom have a symbian version if route 66 is crap. Its possible to get OZI ce to run off a memory card but i dont know if it will work with symbian.

No, Ozi is not designed to run on Symbion OS.

I use SmartComGPS in place of Ozi on the phone - very similar in features to OziCE or perhaps a bit better even. There are freeware converters to it's map format from JPG, ozi maps etc. Works like a charm, and i always have it in my pocket.

I love the 6110 and now have smartcomGPS v1.55 (which is compatible with oziexplorer maps and tracks etc) installed and working perfectly.
Smartcomgps uses maps in ogf2 format, which is easily created. All my important oziexplorer maps are now on my phone.

I also have Garmin Mobile XT installed with the the full Garmin MapSource City Navigator Australia 2008 mapid 271 installed. Good interafce and contains POI such as food and fuel stops etc.

So now i have 3 GPS programs to choose from. Route66, Garmin mobile XT and smartcom GPS which is compatible with oziexplorer.

I tried to install Garmin Mobile XT but it doesn't seem to load properly. Which do you prefer Route 66 or Garmin?

I like the garmin interface better, and so far from what i have seen the Mapsource australian city navigator maps are more update and complete (around my area anyway) than the 2007 Route66 navteq maps.

The only think i dont like about Garmin mobile XT is the way it pans the maps. Route66 is quicker as it starts panning left, right or up and down straight away. With Garmin XT, the cursor has to slowly scroll to the screen edge before it starts panning.
