GU 2.8TD VS 4.5 ON GAS

TO THE GUYS WHO GOT EM, BUYIN A GU WANNA KNOW IF IM BETTER GOIN FOR 2.8TD OR 4.5 ON GAS, GONNA BE A EVERYDAY CAR, BEACH CAR AND WANT TO TOW OTHER PATROL BEHIND IT WHICH IS GONNA BE MORE RELIABLE AND ECONOMICAL FOR THE JOB.

hmm..tuff one this one!
how many mods would you be planing to do to either car?? or would you leave them both stock standed apart from the gas on the tb45?!
my tb45 on gas returns about 23/100km taking it easy round town and 21 odd L/100km on highway! thats with 33's and 3 inch lift with alot of work tools on board, plus big steel top rack!
oh thats with the usual exhaust/headers as well
towing on gas expect around 25-30l/100km..
as for reliability..only a td42 would be more reliable then a tb45!
There a big stong donk, underpowered yes.. but strong!
on gas just watch for cracked heads around the 200-250 mark.
can open the tappets up to 18thou to help prevent cracking!
if you plan to pout the tb45 on gas go the injection set up over the old mixer set up!
sum up i love my tb and it cops a flogging on the weekends and never faulters!

Yeah it is a down to the wire thing. They are probably the two least desirable engines for a GU but that is not to say they are crap by any means.
I would go a dual fuel TB45 if they were my only two choices, and I'd hang out for a tidy one.
I agree it's going to be close to 30 litres of gas per 100km travelled. Don't listen when people tell you it's 20 or 21 or even less, they are just wishing. But gas is so much cheaper than diesel that you can afford to burn more of it.

i got a gq rd28t which i love its just got the standard mods 3" system 3'' lift boosted upto 11psi 33" rubber it goes well i beat most of my mates 4.2s on road offroad it lacks a litlle under 1800 rpm which is only on very steep and bumpy hills .. it ll tow a 1600 kg boat at 120ks but tends to get a bit hot 95 -100 ks is good.. it uses 14 -18 l/100ks but im getting the injector pump done next week so im hoping itll get better..
so im happy withit but if i was to buy again id make sure i got one that had heaps of problems and been fixed by a mech and not the one thats never missed a beat and had nothing done to it .. cause i had to spend a bit on her ..and now the hand brake wants me to get somthing smaller so she can use it to ..

I agree with simcoe. The manuals seem to get much better fuel consumption than the autos. My 4.5 auto, 3" lift, 33s gets about 25-26L/100km (300km from $55 ~ 80L) around town (on gas) but I don't drive for economy. Took my rola roof bars off last week for a trip from adelaide-melbourne-adelaide and got a best of 21.5L/100km with cruise on at 110kph (2 people, 2 dogs, weekend luggage). Haven't got that in a long time though. Pain in the arse when on a long trip to keep stopping for gas or going out bush but I don't go enough to worry about it.
When towing across the Nullabor with a 7x4 box trailer (approx 800kg), cruise set at 100kph, averaged 26L/100km.
Been very reliable in the 30,000km I've had it, only regular maintenance. Done the Nullabor 5 times and would drive around Australia tomorrow without a worry.
Can't comment on the 2.8 though.

the 2.8 is too underpowered if you want to tow

on the highway at 100kph i have had it down to 16-17L per 100.
but around town its 20L per 100. but if i put my foot down it will go to 30-40 or more
on my last trip up to QLD and back towing a box trailer with the bike in it and the car full of stuff i was getting 20-21 per 100 but i droped it back a gear or two and maintained 100-120kph when i got to the big hills etc..

I'd go the petrol.
Purely because if it shits itself its a) cheaper to fix and b) easier to put a real motor in it if desired.

AUTO would be better for towing.
and definately better on the beach.
im not a fan of the autos either but sometimes they are better.
but the auto will return worse fuel economy
