Improving windscreen wipers

Hey All

Well for those of you who live in SE Qld you know its been raining since thursday arvo last week. therefor needing to use your wipers, My question is......The windscreen wipers on my 80 series are too slow, the difference between slow and high is hardly noticable.

Is there anyway to improve the performance of the wipers???? i.e bigger motor, more power????

Disconnect the motor from the wiper linkage. check the movement of the linkage - is it binding? is it hard to move by hand?

Check wiper motor - turn it by hand - there will be some restriction ( magnetism in the pole pieces ) does it feel like it's binding?

Replace or repair anything that doesn't feel right. ( the linkage is bloody expensive to buy genuine )

Use rainex! It makes a huge difference have used it on all our cars and dont need to use the wipers as much or as hard. It may not fix your main problem but is worth doin on any car.... Even a Toyota Troy

Troy does the water run off your windscreen, or does it just sit there until you turn on your wipers on, even in this rain i don't go past intermediate, you'll benefit more from a well cleaned and sealed(like waxing your car) screen than quicker wipers, something like autoglym glass polish will help you see better in the rain, and even better if you seal it off with something like rainX , which is good, but wipers can have a tendency to chatter after a while.
Even something like a merc with a super fast wiper is still crap to see though when in heavy rain if the glass isn't up to scratch.

I agree with that, and also make sure you have new good quality wiper blades on.

im using silicone wipers on both my cars - they will acutally slow the blades down though cos theyre very sticky... but they do a fantastic job!

and if you think your blades are slow, find someone with a sierra and ask to see theirs go full speed =) haha its horrendous!

Seems i need to do something to the glass, because i noticed even when the windscreen is wet the wipers start screeching, im running genuine wiper blades. Will give the glass a polish up and see what happens, but i will check the motor and linkages. The wipers on Dads D40 navara are awsome (i know new car vs 17 yr old truck) but they go so hard your waiting for the arm to fly off!

Once you start using rainex, you have to keep using it. It breaks down due to uv. When it's part broken down it's about 10 times as bad as nothing. Though I do agree, when it's working, it is good.....

... but sounds like you're wiper motor/mechanism is farked. "Fixing" it with RainX is like fixing castor problems with a RTC steering damper.

I only put it on about twice a year and never had trouble..... mind you it doesn't rain much so if it did more often i guess I'd do it more often

Considering race cars use it when there wipers shit them selves completely it can't be too bad As stated though it wont fix the main problem but will help ya win a race if needed

thats weird - both my zuk and my mazda run these - red on the zuk and clear on the mazda - lasted all last summer and going great right now too.

I had a set of reds on the zuk while it sat for 3 years and even they worked quite well - although full of dust, grit and crud...

how fast are the wipers?
on the GU i mostly use the 4 low intermediate settings and the medium setting..
but when its pissing down and i put the wipers on the fast speed they fly

maybe thats what breaks them

on the pajero they are great

they dont break but the rubber breaks down in the sun
i cant win

ive been using silicone wiper blades for years. i tend to replace them every year or 2 and never had a drama, and we run them on all our 4bys here,

Is the wiper motor a bit tired. ie brushes etc. Dismantle wiper motor, give it a clean up.

also, would it improve it if you were to put a relay in the loom to give the motor a full charge of constant 12 volts similar to what you do when you are considering improving the importance of your headlights.

We have the same problem although mine is a 4Runner

I initially assumed the wiper stalk control was cactus and I got another but same deal. I then swapped in the motor from my 2wd hilux as it's wipers rock etc but same again, slow as, so it wasn't the actual motor.

Tried other blades and there was a minor difference.

Recently checked the voltage at the actual wiper motor battery feed terminal and found it's only getting 10.2V so I think this is the problem. I intend to do a direct 12v feed to the wiper motor from the battery to check operation but I just haven't got to it yet so I'd suggest you check this in yours as well.
