Can any one point me in the direction of info on the MQ, GQ and GU Power Steering boxs. I wanna know if it's worth going to a GQ or GU box compaired to the MQ box.
So How much "throw" the box has?
Bolt pattern?
Physical size?
Uni and Spline size's?
Pitman Arm size, Lenght and angle?
Is 1 harder to "tap" than another?
Cheers Benny
P.s. Search come up with nothing....

cant help you with all of the info you need but i can give u a few bits and pieces.....
MQ box bolt pattern is different to GU and GQ.
GU and GQ im nearly positive are the same pattern, if you were to go to GQ box you may as well go GU as it would be an improvement.
GQ box are massively prone to leaking on the bottom pitman arm seal which is a nucence....
GQ/GU boxs are slightly larger in physical size but there isnt too much in it.
Throw wise doesnt really matter in your application as GQ diffs are wider then MQ diffs but at the end of the day its only going to move as far as your bump stops.....
GQ spline going into the box at the top im farely sure is the same.....
pitman arms are very similar in size, though different angles and shape etc.
Both are as easy to drill and tapper as the other if you wished to reverse tapper or some such thing.....
For your application, i would of thought u would be looking into a box that allows you the ability to drill and tap for Hydro Assist steering....
I had my MQ box drilled and tapped for hydro assist but never tested it. The patrol type box arent the worlds greatest type of box for hydro assist.
Might be worth while changeing to a box that is good for that as going up to GQ or GU box from MQ requires all the same changes, and to be honest, it probably isnt really worth the hassle,. however if you changed to something that u can get drilled and tapped for hydro assist, and just cap it off till u want to use it, it would be worth while....
Pirate has heaps of info on the types of boxs etc that are better for hydro assist work. i know Hilux stuff works well from what ive heard.
hope any of that helps.

The GU box I saw looked massive. Didn't compare it side by side with an MQ though. The pitman arm on the GU also looked rather large and stout compared to MQ.

Had a look into this over the weekend and spoke to GQ/GU Guys about it all. A few things are I've learnt above.
After looking into it. I've come across a tapped GQ box with hydro ram still waiting to hear on a price and Avilabilty of it.
If thats fails I'll look into a GU, tap it, mount it then hyrdo ram.

GU = BIGGER
STRONGER = NO.
the weakest point on the sector shaft where they both bend is the same diameter!!!!
seals are good for upto 1750psi, now you just need someone who knows what they are doing to set up the pump properly!!!

So GU is bigger than GQ but not stronger? But both are bigger and stronger than MQ?
Pitman arm looks like weak link on MQ/MK to me....

your far more likely to break a tierod / end or drag link than a pitman arm.
They are up out of the way and harder to hit and havent got as much stress on them most of the time....
i never had any issues with my pitman arm on my MQ with 39.5s and just kept bending tie rods...

when i baught my GQ the guy gave me a spare GQ pump, he also said that GU are the sort after pump as apparently make it easier to turn larger tyres.

Ok after looking into it a bit, I came across a tapped GQ power Steering box, Lines, Fittings and Hydro ram of a mate for decent money.
So I now need to get a Pump, Steering cooler, fit it all up and pump it all in.
I'll be getting this from Chris at Locktup4x4.com
http://www.locktup4x4.com.au/product/1a ... 2516c.aspx
Next thing is getting the GQ box to match the MQ Steering colum looks interesting
