D40 Navara servicing

Well i just picked myself up off of the floor after calling my local dealer to book my navara in for its 40 000 klm service

about $1200 :shock: :shock:

thats with new brakes on the front does this seem right

about 650 for the service and 480 for the brakes as they have to replace the rotors

why would you be paying for brakes ?? it would still be under warranty ??

brakes are a wearable item and therefore not under waranty

wearable item my @#$%. pads mayby but not rotors. mayby a good idea to take it else where for a 2nd opinion. wouldn't be the first time dealers have made a fault.
if it is genuine then hit nissan up. not sure what consummer rules you have but here it would be covered under consumer law.

I know one of my services on my D40 was about that price - not sure if it was 40 or 50 thou though.

I had the breaks done also but at 60,000 (not 40,000) and as 92mac said no they are not under warranty as it was considered normal wear.

welcome to the joys of modern cars where brake performance is preferred over longetivity.

Go with DBA rotors - you will find they last a bit longer I've been told by D40/R51 owners. Also don't use the genuine nissan pads if you can avoid it, try the bendix or TRW Lucas range. I'm a bit of a lucas fan as I've had great experiences with them in the past, they are soft pad and can be pretty dusty but they don't seem to eat rotors like bendix ultimate (the only bendix pad which comes close to the performance of the lucas). Downside is that they'll probably last no longer than the std nissan pads.

You may notice the brakes wont work as effectively as beforehand but it shouldn't be major. Depending on pad choice you will probably appreciate less brake dust on the rims too.

But all of that is IF your brakes actually worn out. Its possible they are, but you wont know until you pull a wheel off and get the verniers out!

rang around a few brake shops today and they were all about the same price for the front brakes as nissan. They also said that they like many newer cars are using a metalic type pad and therefore wearing the rotors and pads out at about the same time. I must also point out that i have towed a 1500kg braked trailer for nearly all of those 40000klms hence what might seem like premature brake wear isnt . But i can tell you now my hilux which i had for 200000 klms and my GQ which has done 350000, 100000klms of towing , only ever had 1 set of new rotors. so its a bit dissapointing to have to fork out $500 every 40000 for new brakes :bad-words:

1500kg braked trailer (provided the brakes actually work) would put very little weight on the tow vechile.

time to get a D22, no brake wearing problems here :)
