my MQ not starting

i have just done a head gasket and got every things back my engine (L28) and when it try to start it and the engine is turning over an at times getting a back fire and also theirs emissons or fuel fumes coming out the top of the carby (weber) when its turning over. i have checked the firing order, grounding leads, hoses etc... im going to get a new distributor cap, rotor buttom and points tonight. if anyone has any ideas in what could be the problem it would be a great help...

Sounds like the dizzy is 180 out on the timming, try taking the dizzy out and turn the engine over one turn and put the dizzy back in.

i have this problem too, when i put my head back together i put the cam back in 180* out. you cant just turn the dizzy backward 180* .... i tryed with no seccess!!! but you can swap the possition of no1 spark plug to the opposit side and re-set the firing order from there. then you can sorta adjust the advance/retard from there, ive got mine set at fully retarded, but its still way to advanced!!! and can not adjust it any further!! but if this is what has happend in your case, save your self the hassle and turn the cam 180*. i would of but i had a $#!1 of a time trying to get it back together!

hey mate. look at replacing the coil pack as well. it is common for those rat out quite quick
