16's or 17's

My original rims and tyres were 15's with A/T 's

I had the opportunity to purchase brand new 5 x 16's 265 x 16 H/T on GU rims that had been traded in from a dealer. $285 the lot. :armsup:

The next lot were 4 x 275 x 16 on /Cruiser rims that were brand new after the owner put on other rims and tyres. That cost me $600 via ebay and I sold the rims for $70 via ebay.

So now I need new tyres once more. The supply of new traded in 16's have dried up since most of the Nissan and Toyota have gone to 17's ( so says the Bridgestone dealer who have the contract to buy the traded tyres from the local dealers.)

There are some bargains to be had if you can source new traded tyres and rims. If I opt to purchase traded 17's will that affect my overall speedo or has the manufacturers been fitting lower profile tyres to compensate.

Not sure how much new tyres are these days but when I was looking years ago they were $230 per tyre.

Anyone gone the 17's and what affect does it have on gearing etc.

The manufacturer should be fitting different profile tyres depending on Rim diamiter to ensure that the speedo is correct. If you increase the diamiter, you have to decrease the profile (the bit after the / in the tyre size - say 265/75 is 265mm wide with a 75 profile). What size tyres are you looking at, you can work out the overall diamter of the tyre, and check it against the standard tyre.

The profile is the sidewall height given as a percentage of the width.

I.e. in the above example;
width=265mm,
profile (as percentage of width)=75%

265x0.75 = 201.
So the sidewall height is 201mm. Multiply this by two and add it to the diameter of the rim to give outer diameter of the tyre.

As layton said, the o.d. of most manufacturer fitted tyres will be roughly the same for patrols and cruisers throughout the years, no matter what the rim size is.

Just looking for H/T or A/T in 275 x 16 but if I can wing a cheap 275/285?? x 17 upgrade I would. Depends on the price between retail 16 tyres to replace my worn tyres or the cost of traded in new 17 rims and tyres.

Will go visit the local Toyota and Nissan dealers to see if they have anything in the wings. ;)

Are you sure you are buying from "Toyota or Nissan" and not just a mechanic who has made a "deal" with you? :lol:
