16's or 17's

My original rims and tyres were 15's with A/T 's
I had the opportunity to purchase brand new 5 x 16's 265 x 16 H/T on GU rims that had been traded in from a dealer. $285 the lot.
The next lot were 4 x 275 x 16 on /Cruiser rims that were brand new after the owner put on other rims and tyres. That cost me $600 via ebay and I sold the rims for $70 via ebay.
So now I need new tyres once more. The supply of new traded in 16's have dried up since most of the Nissan and Toyota have gone to 17's ( so says the Bridgestone dealer who have the contract to buy the traded tyres from the local dealers.)
There are some bargains to be had if you can source new traded tyres and rims. If I opt to purchase traded 17's will that affect my overall speedo or has the manufacturers been fitting lower profile tyres to compensate.
Not sure how much new tyres are these days but when I was looking years ago they were $230 per tyre.
Anyone gone the 17's and what affect does it have on gearing etc.
