Replacing ignition barrel

Just had the barrel lock up on me on my 80 series cruiser.
The car is still under 200 000 k's.
Not very happy. Is this a common problem and how much is a new one going to cost me?
What about fitting? it looks as though I will have to drill the old one out as the fixings don't have any heads, its some type of cone shaped bolt that I suppose is designed as an anti theft thing.
Thats great until you have to remove it.
Any help?

Try undoing it with a hammer and small chisel. The heads on those bolts snap off when you put them in as you guessed it anti theft.

the bolts have heads but the snap off when the preset tourque is reached, the easiest way if you cant just cut the heads off is to drill a hole and hammer a tourx bit into then and undo as normal.

not sure on cost, probably hit up a wrecker?

The problem is that I cant access the bolts as the head side is facing into the dash from underneath if you can follow that.
The only thing that I can get too is the threaded end and that is recessed about 6 mm into the female side of the two pieces of the support that is wrapped around the steering column.
I still cant get a drill or easy out or anything else for that matter under the dash from either side.
There has to be a way though without having to gut the entire dash and steering column, surely this has happened before to somebody.

Tap the lock barrel column bracket with a hammer to loosen things a bit, then side-cutters are a great invention for most security screws and even the ignition bolts.

The metal is soft and good quality side-cutters will dig-in and grip the remaining head.

What about for a locked-up barrel? Does the wire trick still work?
