Alt return line (and especially the fitting on the engine end) will probably not flow well enough - oil could back up and push through turbo seals.

Agreed.. Punch a hole high in the sump and bronze a fitting in there. Easy done.

Put it in the side of the sump, but make sure it is above the level of the oil.

Is there any benefit to putting it in the sump instead of the lifter covers?
I figure on extreme angles oil could reach the level of the return in the sump, causing it to back up - is this possible?

yes go for the side cover, it drains directly to the sump and is a lot less effort.

How come you dont see any in the side cover. Its sounds like a good idea and heaps easier to install. I had an air research turbo high mount on my old 2h and the return went to the sump. Im just about to do a turbo job on my new 60 and (same air research turbo and high mount manifold). Im just wondering has anyone done the return line to the side cover before?

I don't fix any of my oil leaks - they inhibit rust.........

can back up and create hot spots in the block, causes a smokey turbo

you can even "T" it into the sump drain plug, had that on a hilux for years with no worries, not ideal, but no cut and weld necessary, so above the oil line is not critical
