Just got a 2.5tonne boat and need something to tow it with. thinking GQ or 80 4.2 turbo diesel. although both seem rare is one better than the other for towing or rated towing capacity?
Also I know a non turbo will pull it much slower but will it use more or less fuel? im thinking it will use more fuel because it is working harder than the turbo model.
any input will be great, thanks

Also how much more juice would the petrol model use compare to diesel model?

Just my opinion but I don't think theres any contest here.
Get a turbo diesel 80 series and you won't regret it.
Petrol will use up to an extra 6 litres per 100km.

GQ's with the highest rated bar can legally tow 2800kg
and if im correct 80 series is 3500kg?
this has been covered a fair bit of late with some good information.

just got rid of an 1hz 80 cause it was too slow/ bad fuel economy towing the boat and it's only 1200kg, bought a 99' rangie to replace it and it tows a lot better and used less fuel than the 80.
might be different with a bigger boat.

I think this is as long as the 80 Series is later then a 95 model otherwise you are back at 2.5Tonne for a Cruiser.
If you compare the 95+ Turbo diesel Cruiser then you should probably compare it to a early GU for price.
If you were towing the boat wherever you go sure you can't go past the direct injected turbo diesel Cruiser otherwise I would seriously consider a petrol in either Patrol or Cruiser.

My 2 cents is a later model petrol 4.5 cruiser 80 series.
but is it only for towing??
and how far and how often?
a non turbo diesel 80 is very economical unloaded. but loaded it uses a fair bit more. but towing a 2tonne car +trailer i would say it would only use 16/17 litres per 100kms on openish road.
empty 11litres/100kms.
just my 2cents.
