Has anyone put an m15a into a sierra? I'm looking at one which is very cheap but want to know if anyone has done the conversion?
Problems I would have etc...
Going into a 96 coily...

Gearbox choice is the problem.

The M motor has its own bolt pattern so the only gearboxes that fit straight up are from a Jimny. The Jimny manual doesn't suit a sierra well as it has a long extension housing for the shifter that will put the shifter pretty much all over the low range shifter.

The other option is the Jimny auto. Not a bad box, but cripplingly expensive to fix if you broke it.

apparently these will bolt straight into a jimny with a m13a engine, everything needs changing over from the m13a to m15a and apparently the ecu's are the same also (i cant see this being the case though.

i was going to do this to mine but looking into it further the throttle body of the m15a sits very far to the lhs of the swift and would hit the firewall on a sierra or jimny. other than that was the vvt-i, if you had a normal m13a and not the vvt-i it would need controlling i figure unless it runs off oil pressure like v-tec.

It has an adjustable cam sprocket run on the intake cam using hydraulic pressure controlled by the ECM with a range of 30 degrees.

Thanks for the advice, I couldnt find anything on here about it and wanted to know how/easy hard it would be.
So theres no chance the motor will bolt up to my sierra box?
Does this mean, if I did couple the motor with a jimny box that I would have to modify the shaft from the gearbox to the transfer case?
I can get the engine from an 07 swift for $450 and at that price I really dont want to pass it up.

a) No, the engine will not bolt up to your Sierra gearbox. Never.

B)The jackshaft (the shaft between the gearbox and the transfer)is the easy bit. If you want a manual, it's going to be a big PITA to make the shifter work with the transfer. If you want an auto, be prepared to have $$$ in the auto, wiring etc. (although it will fit)

Here's the problems I can think of:

Totally custom trans tunnel/shifters
Flywheel?
Maybe starter?
Clutch
Sump
Oil pickup
inlet manifold?
airbox
Fan
Radiator hoses
Radiator
Coolant lines (hard lines)
ECU if you have an auto donor motor or want a auto (which would be much easier to fit)

I know $450 sounds really good, but even if the motor was free I still think this will be an expensive and complex conversion. I've seen an M13 in a sierra and whilst it did fit OK, It was far from a drop in, and the guy building it had a whole auto jimny to pull parts from.

Not trying to be negative, but I really think the only way to viably build a M engined Sierra is to start with a Jimny wreck. There's too much weirdness with the M motor.

I know nothing about these motors and finding information on the net seems to be hard.
My current engine is dying and I need a replacement.

My list is either:
G13BB
M15A
GTI

Guess ill be crossing the M off the list then.

The BB is a REALLY easy swap - I've done one.

GTI's are well past it IMHO and a poor candidate due to the dissy hassles. If you want a GTI you really want a G16B.

Ha, your twisting my arm here.
But it's good to know.
There's a G16B on eBay for 450 at the moment,
300 freight to TAS I think.

Seems like less hassle and a few guys have put them in on here so ill just copy them.

How different is the m15 block to the m13 block proportianally?

Is it possible the m13 intake, exhaust and sump are bolt on (they often are in the g series)

Mark has already said the gearbix fits and the ecu are supposed to be interchagleble, even if he paid through the nose for an auto or did some tunnel mods for a manual it would be an intersting set up.

At $450 for the engine it might be an idea to go take a measuring tape to some one who has a jimny m13

Just remember with the Jimny gearboxes, the earlier jimny's from 98 to 2001 that used the g13bb have the same gearbox bolt pattern etc as a 1.3 litre sierra From early 2001 Jimny's changed to a M13a engine and the gearbox to engine is different you will also find the headrest, is different, speedo goes to 180kmph from 160kmph Hazard switch, rear wiper switch and instrument writing font changed bla bla bla lots of tiny changes
