Does anyone know if a 3a diesel gear box goes straight into a '88 2a? The 2a has had the holden engine fitted so I don't know if it used to be petrol or diesel befor the swap or if it even matters.

No such thing as a 3a, however - All series boxes are interchangeable - except 6cyl. If they are both 4cyl boxes, it will be a straight swap, apart from needing:
a SIII clutch MC and extending the hydraulic line to the opposite side of the bellhousing.
A SIII Pressure plate.
You can also use the bellhousing and input gears from the IIA, and the rest of the SIII box, if you don't want to change the above 2 items.

3A never heard of one tho there was a s3 stage 1 which had the same 4 speed as a rangie and either had a 3.5 V8 or a Isuzu 4BD1 and no your holden 6 wont bolt straight up tho could probably be adapted to it
