Mild shift kitted auto zook?

(posted in general tech as well)
While I've got the engine and auto out for the conversion I was thinking of getting my auto worked slightly to get a more positive shift through the gears. The auto is a cable operated A41 aisin-warner out of a AE71 corolla running behind a 20v 4AGE 1.6.
Am i going to suffer with really harsh gear changes even with a mild kit?
Is it a matter of suck it and see?
Should I just wheel it stock and then see if I need the kit?

I wouldn't bother as the toyota motor will be putting extra stress on the rest of your driveline as it is and kitting the auto will only make it worse with harsher gear changes. The whole beauty of an auto is it takes some stress off your driveline.

good point. I'll just put it in and see how it goes. it won't take long to pull it out anyway like sierrajim said in the other thread.

how much more power than stock are you going to run through the box? if its a lot i'd be uping the line pressure or putting a shift kit in it.
if its shifting normaly and you are right into it you could flare( engine reving up on gear changes) the box and burn out the clutch packs out and kill the box pretty quick. i have done this with stroker engines before. if you are soft on the gear change you should be right.

My 2C - put it in and drive it. If you don't like something it's doing, then you can get it modded to avoid that problem.
If you kit it before you've driven it you won't know what you were trying to fix with the kit.

Not having had an auto in the sierra or driven one before it's all an unknown for me. Dozoor mentioned that lowrange will accentuate the gear shifts. I'll leave it stock and see how it goes. Steve can you give me a contact for those urethane bushings you used on gregs(?) sierra transfer case to lift it?

Purple pig in Bayswater.
And he's right, shifts get really "bitey" in low range, especially with low gears. It will already feel like it has a kit in it.
