Has anybody had this problem?.2001 rav4 auto (wifes car)

Bought a 2001 rav4 auto cruiser for my wife about a week ago.
350 k's after we bought it we pulled up at lights and the car stalled.
We started it in park, put it into drive and it stalled again?
What's happening now is somedays you can drive it,
somedays does same thing, whenever you put it into gear it stalls?
Has no problem starting in park or nuetral.
Have had it to mechanic who thought it must be electrical.
Had it to auto electrics 3 times and they can't find anything wrong.
Sent it to gearbox specialist and they can't find anything either?
They're all still working on it at different stages.
Has anybody had or heard of this happening?
All help greatly appreciated.
Thanks James

been 2 weeks now and still not a lot.
Narrowed down to either gearbox or electrical problem,
however the search continues.

have you taken it to toyota
they can hook it up to the it2 and check for codes and stuff

sounds like the torque converter lockup is faulty
if the lockup sticks on, it will stall the engine
ty it down a hill, start the car in neutral, and let it roll, as it is rolling at a sped you could be driving at, select D and see if it stalls.

Could be lots of things being intermittent. Are you able to hold the revs up just off idle when it is doing it and then put it into drive. Could be lock up converter or may be a slow Idle solenoid motor not being able to react fast enough to load or it may get stuck, had similar problems with speed sensors when pulling up and stalling. If you could get some codes out of the ecu that would help. Need as much info on general driveability of vehicle. Has the engine or ECU light been on.

Definately get it it scanned for codes as said. Had a similar problem with a Barina once, cutting out as soon as you select drive or reverse. No codes logged but replaced coolant temperature sensor and it fixed the problem. It was running like crap on start up though, overfueling etc. Does the Rav run smooth on start up?

Google to look for transmission computer problems you will see lots of them.

thanks guys!
No car wont run if you rev it then put it into gear.
Some1 else did suggest the torque converter lock up....
It's at a gearbox specialist now and wont be checked
til thursday.
Had it scanned by 2 different mobs....they had to wait til
it did it so they could check it.
When it did,it said there was nothing wrong????(i hate computers)
The guys who have it now have said it could be sticky solenoid or
wrong oil may have been used.
Thank you all heaps

Yeah a good scan tool is great but not the answer for everything.
Good luck with it. Post up how you get on with it

Well after 7 weeks of hell.....it's fixed.
After changing computers and then changing it back it turned out to be the torque convertor lock up plate.
It had split,so they replaced the torque convertor and it's been sweet as for approx 9 days now.
Thank you ever so much to each of you for your input,
It is very much appreciated.
Cheers
