Rocklobster

considering doing a rocklobster on my transfer case but want to know a few things I haven't been able to find in the bible.

firstly I have an 84 LWB 1 litre, 4 speed, 4.1 diff (driveline is stock) running 30" tyres

can I use my 1 litre case or do they only fit into the 1.3 cases? (I am assuming yes because the 1 litre gears are larger than the 1.3 going by pics)

as per the bible (quoted below) my final crawl ratio is 35.316
but I was unable to find/work out what it will be with the lobster gears?
do the lobster gears affect high range or just low range? (or will I end up with 1.3 high range)

bible wrote:NT 1lt 4spd Sj410 sierra gears:

1st 3.163
2nd 1.954
3rd 1.421
4th 1.000
rev 3.321

4hi 1.590
4lo 2.716

diff 4.111

3.163 x 2.716 x 4.111 = 35.316 crawl ratio

Thanks,
Mark

ok, after a bit more research I found this link:
http://ironbark.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au/~jeff/xfer2.htm

which tells me that the high range gears from the 1 litre are used with the low range of the 1.3 (bit clearer than I've read before, pics help)

so I should retain my current hi range gearing but end up with lower low. and by my calculations (please confirm someone) is 3.163 x 4.16x 4.111 = 54.092 crawl ratio

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
Is it really worth the effort?
You'd have to buy TWO X 1.3 transfers and machine the guts out of a gear or two and weld a few back together.

For $500 you can take your pick of Trail Gear reduction sets that are "no questions asked" guaranteed.

why 2x 1.3 cases?
I already have the 1 litre gears (usually the hard bit to get a hold of) all I need is 1 set of 1.3 gears (should be able to find someone who has got crawler gears and still has standard gears laying around, will be able to get these pretty cheap/hopefully free)

will cost maybe $200 - $250 for the cut and shut. get a couple of new seals, new bearings depending on condition and its done.

I dont ever plan on running any bigger than 31" rubber (30"s at the moment) all the pro kits i've seen reduce high range and I dont want any high range reduction, its a 1 litre!

Thanks for the input,
Mark.

If you're up for a challenge, go for it, but there's not really any sensible reason to do this any more. Reduction gears are plenty cheap and reliable there's no need to go cutting and welding case gears.

However, your oppsition to replacement gearsets is a bit off track. 1.0's already have a much lower high range than 1.3's. All the "% reduction" figures quoted are against a 1.3 case, not a 1.0.

a 1.3 case has a 1.409 high range, you have a 1.59. Most reduction gear sets are not over 1.6:1 on high until you get into the 6:1 low range sets, and most of the 4:1 cases have exactly the same high range as you have now.

Just a thought, could you retain the standard 1.3 high range gears and use some aftermarket low range gears?
I have no idea if its at all possible.

Not really.
On the face of it anything is possible, but I don't really think it would be worth it.
