Can i do this?? 4JB1-T into '82 Swb Jackaroo

Hi all,

As the Subject sugests, i want to know if i can swap out my C223 with a 4jb1-t?? Does anyone know how much work it takes? Anyone done this before?? Am i wasting my time??

Are you wasteing your time? Thats up to you.
Have I done one, No.
How good with tools are you? doing it yourself or getting a work shop to do it for you? Whats your budget?
Talk to your states transport dept and see if your legally allowed to swap and whats required to make it legal and registerable after the swap.
The old square jacks have a lot in common with the tf series Rodeos so a swap is probably possible.
Youll need to look at the size and weight of the two engines, gearboxs, location of the engine mounts, cross members, which side the fuel pump and turbo are on, fuel line location,exhaust pipe differences, drive shaft lengths and front torsion bar rateing and brakes.
I'd go with keeping the MU5 gearbox and transfer case that goes with the 4jb1t rather than trying to fit the new engine to the old box.
The 4jb1T engine benefits greatly from a 2.5 inch exhaust and haveing the boost compensator on the fuel pump adjusted to give more fuel at lower revs.
Its very much a case of measure twice cut once, and allow twice as much money as you originally thought. I reckon its doable.

Thanks for the info Guzzi, but i thought the 4jb1t was in the 1989 Jackaroo, this shape seems very similar to mine. I have a full workshop and mechanic at my disposal, (My girlfriends Dad) Was hoping to do a fully swap of all drive train as the 5speed box would be nice. From what i have seen so far the engines and engine bays seem to be very similar, ie air intake, fuel lines etc..As for my Budget, does anyone really stick to their budget?? I didnt think so... I know it will cost me a fair amount of $$$ thats why it hasnt been done yet.. Just looking to put more go into my beast.. Im looking at buying a complete 89 jackaroo and sourcing all i need from that so there goes 3-4k..
Anyone else with some input?? All sugestions welcome

It has been quiet on here hasn't it.

Ok had a look at your photos, the last one of the underside of your truck, shows the exhaust coming from the left of your engine.

The 4jb1t it exits on the right and cross's over to the left behind the gearbox.

If the 89 jack had this engine see if you can hunt up one for a bit of comparison to yours and go from there or just buy it and save a lot of time, money and effort.
If the 89 jack had it there shouldnt be too many differences in regards to mounting points and crossmembers etc, so it "should" be a fairly straight forward swap.

I'm guessing the lack of response is because no-one has done this before, so it will probably be up to you to break new ground.
Having said that I know that they have been fitted to some Landrover Defenders.

Thanks Guzzi, yeah sure has been quiet on here... Im not sure when i will start the conversion as work is getting busy for me now, but i hope it will start soon...Thanks again for your info and insight... Will def post pics if i can get it done..
