Hi all.

I have a 2002 Triton and need to replace the centre bearing. Just wondering if anyone can give me any tips/info on the job. Also, is a hydraulic press required to remove the bearing from the shaft?

Any help appreciated.

Hi
I did one on a 1991 triton and didnt require a press or anything, just tapped the old one off with a block of would and a hammer , same with the new one. That was after all the necessary retaining nuts etc were taken off

Accurately mark the tailshaft, so it can go back together the same, and not misaligned, and thus give vibrations.

But you probably already knew that ;)

I didn't know this was going to an extreme. As far as I know, the uni joint has to be separated to be able to remove the bearing from the shaft.

If they are anything like hilux ones, piss it off all together and fit a single piece shaft.

Do they have to be custom made - one piece shaft I mean? and would a land cruiser one piece shaft fit also??

Just get one custom made. Not sure about the cruiser shaft.

whats the advantage of a centre bearing set-up V's a one piece shaft? It would have to be cheaper to manufacture a one piece you would think....

me and a mate did his on the weekend. pull the tailshaft off, take the uni apart carefully, mark which way it come apart too! mark where the nut and everything else is, take that off too, take off the half of the uni thats left, marking where it went on the spline as well. Change the bearing and assembly is reversal of dismantling, basically, mark everything as u take it apart!
Im no mechanic, i might have missed somthing or other, please feel free to correct me if it needs it. Its as much as i can remember
