Just did a tapett adjustment on my recently purchased 60 series, 400 thou,2H Turbo.Removed rocker cover to be welcome by alot of black sludge.What to do?Just do normal oil changes,or give the old girl an engine flush?

Its caused by lake of oil changes. Ive heard if you change the oil fairley regular it will help but you will not get rid of it all.

Its pretty good stuff. Use it before your next couple of oil changes and you should be right. I'd do it fairly soon, sludge kills motors.

Maybe just shorten your service intervals for a while. Dump oil now, run a fresh 10L and filter through for say 1000km. Then dump that oil and filter again and go from there.

Pay to check were the oil returns to the sump and make sure that the path is not blocked.Vehcle I owned had a cronic sluge problem.During work done on it,it was set on fire twice.The return path for the oil was blocked.Oil filled the rocker cover and pumped back through the air cleaner onto the exuast pipe.The sludge had baked hard.Spent hours getting rid of it.

Got my Hilux desludged in QLD surely someone down there does it.
They had it at the workshop and a mobile unit.
They disconnect your oil filter/rocker cap/drain and hook up a chemical solution that runs through some filtration before recirculating to flush it all out.

Cost Effective Maintenance has a flushing oil concentrate, it worked well in my old Hilux, pre engine rebuild.

There was bugger all crap in it when we pulled it down, compared to when we first looked.

May be worth giving it a go..

there was an add in the back of a 4wd monthly not so long ago about this stuff that you flush through ur engine and it cleans all the sludge out, say it got 3L out off a patrol i think it was it is about $135 sounds like it wouldnt be bad stuff..

we had a cat engine on the rig that was leaking diesel from an injector into the oil system. when we took the rocker covers off to replace the injectors, everything was squeaky clean. I have since heard others say that you can run a half a cup of diesel just before oil change, idle for ten minutes then change oil. but you do it on your own remittance, it's only what i heard.

It's also worth pointing out that these motors have 5000k oil change intervals, not 10k. possibly a previous owner was doing them at 10k only.

All the diesel mechs ive spoken to who have done this, only did it just before taking the motor apart for serious work, and they did it to clean the internals, so it wasnt such a crap job for them once it was apart.
NEVER heard any of them talk about doing it as part of scheduled servicing.

Ive also heard of it being done alot here on forums.
However the point I was trying to make was that it was only used when the engine was stuffed, and needed o Haul, not as a band aid cleaning solution whilst in service. Those diesel mechs would NOT do it any other time.

Do it at your own peril, I would never do it, unless it was -60degC, and the oil needed thinning to suit the conditions.
however I would not use it as a flush idea.
Yeah I know years ago, and during the war ,petrol was used to thin oil as needed in aircraft and all types of machinery, however we now have multigrade oils that dont need our input to make them suitable for conditions.
New oils have excellent detergent, and soot handling capabilities.
If you want to flush it whilst the engine is running, do frequent servicing, or add an extra particulate filter etc.
Or do a cem clean when the engine is not running, so no harm is done.
I would not reccomend, even tho people have done it before, and gotten away with it, I bet that some may have done it, and had disasterous results, and there not saying anything about it. Anyway.
If you chose to , do so knowing the risks.

I have used the CEM stuff on both my Dudlux and camry .. the camry was unbelieveable .. from where the oil normally read on the dipstick I would get about 4 liters out at a change .. I got nearly 5 out .. and it was not pretty stuff ... ( smelly and a little lumpy) The hilux (2l-t) didnt seem to make any difference.

I have never put diesel in my Lux to clean it.
I have used a full chemical flush and CEM treatment.

CEM was great while it was in because you drive for 30mins with it in (the power was great) drain it put in fresh oil; power gone again don't know why but it was bloody weird. Tryed it on another 2.8 Lux because my mate didn't believe me; his did the same thing

Full chemical flush was great heaps of crap came out and my oil didn't blacken badly for one or two changes. Didn't observe any power increase but the temps dropped.
