G'day,
I was looking at an article about the rocklobster transfer case setup.
I was just curious why does it have to be an 84 transfer case that it is done too. What is so special or different about them.
Cheers

The 1L transfer case has lower gearing.
By combining the gears from both transfer cases you can make the lower geared rocklobster case.

There are two types of 1L case - depending on the year of the car.
I think pre 1984 - they were different to what is commonly refered to as a 1L case (1984 to 1988ish).
Jtraf - perhaps you could shed some more light upon this? What was anf's wierd x-fer case?

has to be the t-case with the 4wd switch/light on it, which is on my 83 lwb 1.0L case. swb got the same case a bit later, 84 ish. the earlier cases are completely different, even mount up totally different. christover

If you have the right case I'd be talking to the Traf bros to do the same as the butter box.

yeah I was looking at doing something like that as I have a 1lt transfer case just lying around but I am not exactly sure what year it's from.
I also might be able to get an 83 1lt case aswell and if it's possible mix the gears with the 1.3 case.
But it all depends on wether it has to an 84 specific case.
Does that make sense.

I think the conclusion is that there are 4 different cases for sierras:
1. 1982 - 1983 - NT 1L Case (has no 4wd light and different chassis mounts)
2. 1944 - 1987 - NT 1L Case (has a 4wd light and mounts as per 1.3L case)
3. 1987 - 1996 - NT/WT 1.3L Case (has a 4wd light and taller gears)
4. 1997 - 1998 - Coiler 1.3L Case (chain driven and taller gears again).
Note: Years are only approximate - but this shows how you can identify the different cases.

Ditto on this - Wolverine - try PM'ing jtraf - he and his brother had a set of gears made up to effectively make a rockhopper out of their x-fer case... could be worth investigating

I'll say I think you could be a bit closer in your estimate

It's been the same x-fer case since WW2

More important is the tooth count on the gears , If you combine the the gears from the common one we get over here it will net you hardly ant increase in ratio ,.

This is how to identify a late 1ltr case.
If it has the Light switch but the lay shaft doesnt stick out of the case it is a 1.3 case. If it doesnt have the light switch at all its an early 1ltr case.
Making the rocklobster gears is not an easy task to get right. But i have seen lots done and if done right failure is very uncommon. I know for a fact a lot of guys that bought Series 1 rockhoppers a few years back actually have rocklobster gearsets made localy here in SE/QLD.
