got a fj55 with a 350 chev wanting to put a 5 speed 60 series box and tranfercase in it, wondering what troubles i will run into: cross member, and if tailshafts will bolt straght up or not ?? also the 60series tranfercases with the 4wd select on a vacum switch, will that be a problem ...
thanks.....

Tail shafts will not bolt up. you'll need a longer front shaft, and a shorter rear shaft

your crossmember will probably be in the way (if the conversion kit put the gearbox back in the standard position, i'm 99% it will be).

the 4wd select i haven't had much experience with, but it was a pain in the arse for a mate of mine that tried putting it in a 60 series that didn't have push button 4wd standard.

oh, and the gearshifter will be moved back about 6 inches. so expect to trim the floor.

what about if i went for a 75series box and tranfercase, would that fix any problem at all or are they all the same ?

You really need to fit a manual L shift 60/75 series transfer case, vac type transfer won't fit in a 40 without chopping up chassis and the 55's not much better.

Not only that you dont have the hassle of faulty solenoids not working to select H4,they are expensive to replace.

As the other reply states tailshafts will have to be shortened and lengthened.

I'm not sure about the mount on a 55.

Unless you find a forty series top plate for the gearbox (rare as hens teeth and expensive if you can find one) you will as the other reply says have to modify the floor to suit the sticks.

you may also have to deal with a handbrake unless you have the handbrake on the rear diff dont know 55's so dont know if they had this

I had a 55 with a 253 and a vacuum type 5 speed / transfere. It had a manual type vacuum switch - no electrics. Just a 5mm vacuum hose to the switch and 2 x 5mm hoses to the transfere. It mounted just below the dash and worked fine. I didnt do the conversion so I dont know whats involved in mounting it but worked sweet.
The chassis or gearbox tunnel didnt look chopped in any way but the x-member was not original but looked good.
