i have a 1.3L g13B.

I was playing around in my car on the weekend and i revved it to 5000rpm once before changing gears. After i did this the engine now idles
really rough and there is a very strong smell of fuel coming from the exhaust. Also when i first start it up in the mornings it doesnt run properly when in the lower rpm 1000-2500. it sounds sort of like only a couple of cylinders a firing when its cold. there is also a very faint black smoke in the exhaust when its idling.

any help appreciated

Sounds like your running a bit rich in the fuel/air mixture.
Start off by giving it a good service with some new spark plugs, filters and oil.
If it's running on a couple of cylinders your plugs may be fouled by soot, caused by a rich fuel/air mixture, which could mean your auto choke is stuck on or if you've got a manual choke you've forgotten to push it back in at some stage. Otherwise it may be time to re-kit your carburetor.

Others on here may have some other suggestions.

Good luck.

Check your spark plugs for condition and spark..
If they are all good, do a compression test.

Actually do this first, if money's tight you can always clean the existing plugs as long as they are only fouled (not warn).

Thanks for the quick replys.

Is there any reason that it would start after i revved it hard if it was a spark plug issue?

If the plugs are really old you may have lost the electrode off one of them or maybe just fouled it with carbon.

At what time did you rev it hard?

In the morning when it was cold or had you warmed the engine up sufficiently before you decided to make it squeal like a banshee?

No it was well and truly warm. I dont take it over 2500 before its warmed up. Its the first time ive had it over 4000

Shouldn't be any ring damage them and your compression should be fine, but it wouldn't hurt to do a compression test. Especially if the motors getting a bit old.

Start with the plugs and if it's still running rough, a compression test and then move on to looking at the carburetor for problems.

ok i replaced the spark plugs today. the old ones were all covered in soot. i checked them on saturday and they were clean so this has only just happened. the car still runs rough so im guessing its a problem with the carby? will driving the car while its running rich cause any damage? ive got a weber sitting at home waiting for an air filter so i dont really want to have to rebuild the standard carby.

Weber.. You must be burdened by a wallet full of cash..
They use a lot more fuel than the Aisin carby and unless expertly tuned don't go any better.
Have you done a compression test to see if it's worth spending money on the motor?

mine was running pretty rough at one stage, quiet knocky, still had power to pull through gears but idle was ROUGH as GUTS..

ended up being a broken piston/skirt, well two actually...
went down the EXACT same path your goin down, plugs were fouling, replaced and inspected, problem still occured...

my answer was a new engine.. fixed that problem RIGHT up! ;)

give it s full service. plugs, leads, oil, filters, and timing. Make sure everything is set right. Could even be a blockage in the carby.

Check all the vac lines. a vac leak could cause the excessive fuel use and rough idle.
