Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Looking to update the tyres at the moment and I am as confused as a blind lesbian in a fish market..

What I want is a tyre that is better than average off the road but needs to do lots or road kms pulling a heavy trailer so I want lots of kms out of them too.

I know I know that what I want is a tyre that doesn't exist but what are my alternatives?
At the moment I am looking at the BF Goodrich A/T but I have seen these Wranglers Silent armour and they look sweet but I dont know just how capable off road are they.
My brother in law has them on his 80 series ( mine will also b going on to an 80) and he has done 15 000 on them, road kms only and they still look brand spanking.
Has anybody seen these off road?
Only other problem that I can see is their price $300 each for 265/75R16
been quoted $260 for BF goodrich A/T's
$250 Cooper S/T's
$260 Set of Mickey Thomson's but the tread didn't look that flash

Most of my off road is sand or gravel and mud very occassionally a little rock down around Collie
Any advice

I have been seriously impressed with the all round performance of the MTR, they seem to be very popular.

I have been steering away from the mud range as I just didn't think I would get the highway kms that I am after.
Do you know what sort of range these would have being used on a daily work ute that tows

just buy a road set and a offroad set(problem solved)

i run MTR's as my road tyres and weekend play (serious offroad is the simex) and am very happy with them, got about 15K out of them so far and only slight wear showing - probablly good for 40-50K, the mud usually have a much deeper tread than atr's...

Best ever road tyre with heaps of off road potential, you cant go past Mickey T FC2.
These will do heaps of K's and with a decent side lug for off road....

My 2 cents

My input is,
I have two sets of tyres, a set of mtr,s for the weekends away and a set of Toyo Opats for the road. (I am interested in the silent armours next time but the Toyos are fantastic on the road).
There is a huge difference between mtrs and probably all other similar tyres and a good all terrain or road pattern tyre for road use. My Toyos will do around 100,000 kms before replacement, are quiet (very) and have far superior road holding wet or dry, but especially when it is wet, than the mtrs on the bitumen. I hate the feeling of loosing the front with the mtrs on on sweeping wet bends such as freeway on ramps. This never happens with the Opats and I dont need to be always thinking about whether the tyres will let go in the wet.
The best choice is obviously 2 sets of tyres but for most people that is not possible so you need to choose a tyre that will work best where you do the most driving. There is no tyre that will be good at everything so the choice will always be a compromise. A set of good all terrains with a set of tyre chains will work better than most mud tyres in the wet anyway if you really get stuck.
By the way, my vehicle is a range rover, not an 80 series.

i recon the FC2s are awsome. dont know about wear rate yet but they are god for an allterrain offroad.

Kind of irrelevent but, I now run my MTR's full time instead of my BF AT's. So far I have found them better in every way on the road. Even in the wet.

I am running 225/75/16 silent armours on the disco and they work really well. Suprised how well they perform off road in rocks, gravel, etc. Not really good in mud but what do you expect.

Seems to be good life and good manners on road. No flat tyres yet...

Uncle is runing them on a 100 series and loves them, also had them on his 75 series ute, but was not as happy with them, and has switched to something else

The FC 2's come with an 80,000km warrantee(pro rata) and i can confirm they are very good off road. A friend had some on a SWB Patrol-offroading and pulling 2 ton trailer daily and his lasted well over 80k's.
On road they are pritty good, but are noisier than other AT's.

You can't go past the goodyear wranglers. I have had mine (33x12.5) on for over three years and they are still over 50% tread... on a LWB Maverick, so pretty heavy.

Sorry I can't tell you how many ks but a fair few over that time. And they weren't brand new when I bought them either!

I think they are an awesome all-round tyre, with more of a leaning to off-road than an AT.

just ordered my 3rd set of MTR's...
Love em as daily and offroad.

but 2 sets of tires are your best option.. some FC2 and simex/swampers etc.

For me the stuffing around of changing wheels depending on where I am going spoils the fun a bit. The wranglers rule for this reason imho.

Well I have finally made a decision and have gone for 265/75R16 Mickey Thompson ATZ.
At the end of the day I went with the tyre dealer that I trusted and followed his advice.
He really only deals with trucks and 4x4's wanting good tyres and has been in the same shop for about 20 years so he must know something right?
Will keep you posted as they go on tomorrow and they will be getting aired down in 2 days time, can't wait!!
