is it my gearbox or clutch?

I have an 88 GQ 4.2 diesel and my first and second gears when at lower revs sounds like its labouring. Almost like ive changed gears to early, from what i can work out i think its my Thrust bearing and clutch that is gone as it is getting harder to pop into first from neutral. If its the box and it needs an overhaul thats not a problem but i want to be sure before i start getting into the divese world of GQ boxes

Any suggestions?

When does your clutch take up? Early or late in the pedal stroke?

It takes up towards the end of the stroke, about half way to mid way up,.
It is getting harder to put into first and really grinds up in low revs, sounds like its grinding apart, like ive shifted up a gear to early. Makes the entire driveline shake at certain revs

how old is the clutch? do you know if all the bearing got replaced last time the clutch was replaced? sounds like it could be a spigot bearing, i had simmiler symptoms when mine went...

I only just bought the old girl, as far as im aware it has not been changed for the last 8 years. It did alot of horse float towing, alot of it, and i have a feeling alot of clutch riding was done as well.

Macca did it happen between say 700 to 1000 revs :?:

hey mate, i have a 96 gq, it has 262000 on the clock. mine makes the labouring feel up to about 1050, i put a new clutch in and it make it a little better but still does it. ive heard it with alot of diesel gq's.

This is what I was thinking, if it was the clutch adjustment ot wear causing it it would be grabbing as soon as you lifted your foot off the floor.

Bit hard when you cant drive it to feel it.

Thrust bearings usually dont cause shifting probelms until they seize or disintigrate, they just get noisy when the clutch is applied.

My guess is the clutch plate is sticking to the flywheel (can do this if there are a lot af grooves) or the spigot is buggered.

if thats what is causing the stick to be hard to push into gear is it also the cause of the grinding noises at low revs?

GQ's make a groaning noise if you load them up at low revs, I know if I go around an intersection in third I need to hit it at at leas 40 or it groans like a bastard, 2nd is tha same but not as bad.

The traits of having a truck grearbox, they all do it.
