Hi I have just purchased a 1991 NH Pajero with the V6 petrol engine (3 litre). It is a 5 speed manual with 140,00km's on it. The unit is in top condition but I was wondering if there are any potential problems I should keep in mind. Someone said the pitman and idler arms should be replaced. What about water pumps and other items. Any assistance appreciated. Fordy Australia

G'day fordy, there's really not very much to look out for in these models however :-
- there was a factory recall on crankshaft pulley bolts (known to shear)
- some were recalled for front brake hose replacement
- make sure timing belt is replaced every 100,000K's a lot of guys do the water pump at the same time to save doing it later on.
- the 5sp can have an input bearing rumble known as rollover noise in nuetral, it stops when the clutch is engaged it's not a problem until it gets MEGA noisey.
- oil pressure sender units slowly die reading lower pressures than there actually is.
Other than that the only other issues start when you modify and drive em hard like CV boots, tie rods, idler arms, wishbone bushes.
If you drive mud expect to be replacing starters, idler pulleys etc.
Well maintained they are quite good a mate in Queensland has a shortie with over 450,000Ks it's tired but has given him 12 years of excellent service.
